a question about ground noise

I got out over the weekend in an old field. I had gain and sensitivity cranked to one notch from max with VGG with stock 11inch coil because most targets are quite deep. I could get what I think was a good ground balance...not much sound either direction when pumping. Ground was 12oclock, the normal standard setting. I located a deep target, and dug a large plug, anticipating having to dig a second to reach the target. I got the target out with the second plug, but when running the coil over the hole, was still getting a strong signal, from the hole itself.

I didnt experiment with the settings at the time, because I didnt want to mess with what just got me a nice old pewter spoon part.

Each of the holes I dug in that field, the tone over the hole persisted.

what would you think is the issue or setting I should adjust in future, as I will be going back there soon.

related more to ground balance not being accurate enough, or gain/sensitivity too high?

Hi there..
I had a VGG and noticed this ' characteristic' of the machine detecting the hole! I felt that the machine has been designed to run very hot to the ground conditions, so much so that it would then signal over an empty hole. From what I can remember, reducing gain and sensitivity only reduced the machines depth performance but not its ability to sound off over the empty hole.
I now have the Smart Plus and well happy with it.. you can run this machine at full sens and it doesn't sound off over the empty hole.. your mileage may vary but they were my findings. Be interesting to see what other VGG users have noticed with their machines.

This can happen for various reasons, deeper target beyond your first signal, another can be when you ground balance a machine you GB on flat soil, so that hole is now 6/7/8 inches away from the height you originally ground balanced the machine causing a signal.
Ground conditions be it hot ground or wet can cause a false signals on a empty hole, always double check holes for short sharp signals, you normally find that open empty and filled holes produce a wider softer signal.
 
Thanks Rich. I really love the audio on this VGG, so going to experiment quite a bit with the settings as I get more comfortable.
