A Question About NiMH Batteries For A Safari

Safari***Ohio

New member
Hi Guy's, This is the first message I'm posting in this forum. I've been reading all of your postings for the last month or so and I would like to say ... thanks for all the GREAT info.! After a few months of researching different metal detectors - I finally decided to order a new Minelab Safari from Kellyco. The people at Kellyco have been fantastic to deal with! I've been going through the learning curve with the Safari and after spending approx. 20 hrs. in the field ... things are starting to fall into place!

So here's my question ... The Safari Manual says that the 1600 mAh rechargeable batteries should last approx.18 hrs. and that the 1800 mAh batteries should last approx. 22 hrs. I've been looking at different rechargeable systems. The best deal I've found yet is the Duracell package - (with a 6 hr. charger ) that comes with ( 4 ) AA --- 2650 mAh batteries - available at Walmart's for only $16.97. Looks like two of these and I'd be all set. So ... is the higher 2650 mAh a plus ... just longer service life - or is there any way that these higher mAh rated batteries can damage the Safari ?

Thanks again for everyone's informative postings !

Same as Trackerman. Use 2700 Mah NiMh batts in my Quattro and it works fine. They just won't last 22hrs, but there is a slight plus in the performances.

Thanks for replies on battery question - though I knew the answer before I asked - just wanted to play it safe !

Is there a difference in performance/quality in NiMH batteries? I bought 16 2600 mAh batteries and a 10-cell charger on eBay. Fully charged, the batteries always start out at two bars and drop down to one bar after around six hours of use.

Thanks!

There's another thread in this forum that has information on these types of rechargeable batteries. It seems the higher the mAh number - ( I've seen 1600 / 1800 / 2250 / 2400/ 2650 / 2700's available in different locations) - the longer life you get. I believe the other thread also mentions the fact shortly after you turn your detector on - other users have had their battery levels drop to the two out of three bar level on the Quattro / Safari - but stays there for a long time.
