Hi Guys, age old question:

Ive a Xterra 70 with 10.5 DD , HF coil came on the machine and i dont have stock coil.

1) I want to hunt for Coins /Relics mainly on FARMERS FIELDS, ploughed and pasture; WHAT IS THE BEST COIL generally ( as i know this can be a technical question, so if simply put what would it be?

2) with the coil i have fitted now what mainly would be its strengths?

Thanks guys i really appreciate your time.

Peter the ROOKIE

ps where is the best place to get the recommended coil (used if poss)

The coil you have on there is a great coil. It will find deep silvr like nobodys biz! IMHO I would start with that and as time and $$ alow look to other coils, Beale.

I just recently purchased both 10.5" DD coils and both 6" coils besides having the stock coil. I've used all of them so far but I keep putting the 10.5" DD HF coil back on. Actually It's kind of a toss-up between the stock coil and the 10.5" DD HF coil depending on the location and the amount of ground that I'm trying to cover.

Last week I went back to an area where I previously spent 3 hours with the stock coil. I'm very sure that I went over this area really well with the stock coil although the first time I was there I was running the sensitivity a little lower (16) than I probably should have. On my first go round at that location I found a sterling silver ring, a dime a penny and a token. When I went back after having purchased the 10.5" DD HF coil I found 15 coins. I was able to run at or near maximum sensitivity. Many of the coins that I found were a little older and deeper than I typically find in that same park but I was impressed by going from finding 4 items to 15 items that I missed with the stock coil. I forgot to take note of how damp or dry the soil was on either of those outings so that may have also made a difference. I've found 100s of coins with the stock coil and will continue to use it but so far I've been having very good luck with the HF 10.5" coil over the MF 10.5" coil. I was really expecting the MF DD coil to do better than the HF DD coil but so far, that's not the case.

On a few outings I put the MF DD on to start with and after 10 minutes or so I feel like I'm not doing very well with it. I switch to the HF and my luck seems to change. Maybe I need to give the MF more of a chance. Technically, the MF coil should do better with silver and copper coins but so far, it hasn't proved itself to me like the HF has. In a little more trashy areas I go back to the stock coil.

Without knowing the ground conditions of the site you hunt, it's only a guess as to whether the DD coil you have would be "better" than a concentric. The "strength" of the DD coil you currently have is that it covers a lot of ground on each sweep. As a general rule, concentric coils hunt deeper and identify targets more accurately in moderate soil conditions than a comparibly sized DD coil. At sites with higher levels of mineralization, DD coils will perform better due to their design characteristics. When you properly ground balance the coil you have, what is the ground phase reading? HH Randy

P.S. IMHO represents In My Humble Opinion

Hey randy, i'm out tonight on the farm i will confirm what the ground readings are and come back to you, i think it was 45 but i may be mistaken... do i need to do the sound thing as well...

the concentric would that be LF? MF, of HF... i does my block in this!! it seems like its one of the most faq which coil... should i have bought an explorer with multi frequency!

cheers Buddy. peter

The stock factory coil is a concentric MF but they also make it in LF and HF. I've heard good things about the LF version but don't believe that I've read anything about anyone using the HF concentric.
