Out of nowhere, my wife buys me a Fisher F5 metal detector. I have never metal detected before, looking forward to it. I have read through quite a few of the postings here--Great Information & Great People. I live in Virginia, if anyone out there has ANY metal detecting tips for a first time user, please I am all ears. Eager to learn, willing to take advice, any accessories I need...etc....I think my first trip will be back to my home town in WV. I am 15 minutes from where the Blair Mountain War took place. Thanks for all your help. Ed
 
Read the manual ............ read it again.............. Use factory suggested presets when first learning..
 
Learn detectorist etiquette.....very important.
 
Just to add/expound on that advice.

Make sure you know what places are legal to hunt, fill all holes, take out all trash you dig up.

And no matter what, even if you know you are on legal ground and have researched the rules/town laws, don't hassel with a power tripped law enforcement/park ranger person. Just walk away.
 
Detecting etiquette is first and foremost. As far as accessories go, if you don't have one then get yourself a pinpointer, "a must have". and GL
 
I agree with all the. Advice given etiquite is number one most impoertant thing basically u should not be able to tell where u have retireved your target when u finished I suggest practicing at ur own yard to start off. Then moving out to parks. Def get a pinpointer there great.
 
Welcome to the forum Ed.:clapping: I think you will like the F5, it is a great MD. If you need any help just look at some of Mike Hillis's past postings, he is a pro with his F5. I also know that there are a lot of other F5 members on here with a lot of knowledge. It will take sometime to get the hang of MDing but don't give up, you will start finding those GOOD finds. Now you want to ask, for a pinpointer it will help you to not make a mess of things when digging and save lots of time for you , may a horde of silver coins be found , by you and gold rings in abundance, along with a few gold coins ,
