Advantages to d2, d3, or d4 tones????

New member
Im new to the F5 can anyone tell me the advantages or disadvantages to
the 4 different tones and how maybe to use them in different md situation
I know they are for the different conductive metals but am unsure
which to use. Ive never really used a tone machine before, always had Whites
What little ive used the F5 im really liking its accuracy and depth. Thx y'all

I can give some suggestions.

Single tone is good for when you just want to set your disc and dig everything that hits above your disc setting, or have set your disc and notch settings and just want to dig what beeps. It is also good for just deep targets as the VCO response will tell you when you have the deeper targets.

Dual tone is good when you only want to hear ferrous vs non-ferrous. It is also good for hunting next to large iron as the the non-ferrous zips will clearly stand out and the F5 is fast enough to find small non-ferrous next to big iron.

Three tone is good for audio discrimination when you want to hear whats under your coil but want to focus on high conductors.

Four tone is like three tone but you get the audio flag for the nickel segment. I hunt in this mode when jewelry hunting.

The key thing about the 3 and 4 tone audio modes is that you can identify the conductive range of your target with your ear and can skip looking at the display for every target. After a period of time you may find that you forget to look at the meter when you are hunting tones.

Great question, great answer!

Mike, which do you prefer hunting in? My guess is D4, or do you bounce around depending on the scenario at hand?

thanks,
Pony

I bounce around, Stilpony, depending on what I'm looking for and the site conditions.

I have an Omega but same tones.

I like d3 in disc with some d2 at some sites/targets.

I'll do all metal when single tone hunting and switch to a little higher pitch.

Haven't really taken a liking to d4 but usually check any solid tone anyway.

Thanks Mike!

Looks like I have a lot to learn yet, and this must be the reason they tell the noobies to just dig everything at first, eh? :pulltab:

Worth mentioning that d1and d2 are deeper than d3 and d4 modes. I verified this on the Omega. Think Monty mentioned this.

Mike, can you expand on the "audio flag" for nickels. I hunt in 4 tone almost exclusively, with minimal disc.
