Advice Needed

Recently bought a X-Terra 705 Gold and a X-Terra 505 for the wife. She now says she is not interested. What would you do ? I can still take the 505 back for a full refund at this time. Maybe I should keep it ? Does it have any advantages to the 705 making it worth keeping or should I take it back and buy another coil or 2 for the 705. Or, take it back and upgrade with another 705 with a different coil. I would like to have two detectors because I have a son that would detect with me at times or even a friend. Any thoughts on this ?

Speaking from personal experience, it's always nice to have a backup detector and better yet if a quality machine such as the XT-505. For one you never know when your detector may need to go in for repairs and two the "505" would always be available for your son or a friend to use, not to mention your wife too, if she ever changes her mind. I tried having friends and relatives use an inexpensive backup detector when out with me, but it just wasn't an enjoyable experience for them. Now that the XT-70 is my backup detector, their enjoyment has went up 10 fold just by knowing when a coin is probably under the coil.

Hey Pilot, If it was me I would take the 505 back and get the full refund and then you should be looking at $550 to $600 to spend... I would get the 6" DD high freq. coil for the 705 because thats going to be your main detector and thats a great coil for high trash areas which most of us run into unless your a strictly relic hunter and your out in the middle of nowhere then I would get the 10" DD High Freq. coil ( you might want to research that coil i mostly hunt parks, schools, old homes.. etc) but back to the topic I would get a pro pointer(makes things alot easier) and then for a friend or your son get a cheaper detector that is easy to learn and still has a good reputation.. for example an ace 250 (I know this is a minelab forum but its good to have variety...lol) and all that should add up to about $600 give or take a little.....but thats just my opinion... Good Luck

I kind of agree with both of these guys but you have to look at it a few different ways.

On the standpoint of keeping it, will you son or friend get that much use out of it or will it sit more often than not? That's a nice little chunk of change to be sitting most of the time at your expense. It's nice to have a backup detector but ever since I purchased my 705, I've never had the reason to have a backup detector. It would be kind of nice but I've gotten more use out of the additional coil that I purchased compared to if I would have bought a backup detector.

In my situation, the coils have been a better idea. I have a few people that I detect with from time to time so I'm not sure would it would be like to always be hunting on my own. If that were the case I may feel a little differently about having an additional detector. 4 of the 5 people that I have detected with have 705's and a few times someone showed interest in trying out a coil or two. That also helps confirm my opinion of having a few extra coils.

If you buy additional coils and some day your your son or friend buy a detector, you'll have coils that you can loan them when you are out hunting beside the day to day use that you will be getting out of them. That 6" HF is a nice coil in addition to the coil that came with the gold package. Being that the gold coil is a HF if would get the 6" HF and possibly the 10.5" MF. You would be set with all 3 of those coils and have change left over.

It may be a tough call for you depending on your situation.

Pilot: Your situation is a little different than mine. When I up-graded from the XT-70, I would have lost half its value if having sold it, because it was already 2 yrs. old by then. As a result it was an easy call for me to keep the XT-70 as a backup machine. Admittedly it doesn't get a lot of use, but have never regretted keeping it as a backup detector and now that one brother has just retired and another brother (both have inexpensive detectors) has moved in close by, suspect it will be getting a lot more use.

I am leaning towards getting the full refund. I will have to talk to my wife first to make sure. When I bought the 705 Gold, the 505 was added at the wifes request when she said...what about me? Because they only had (1) 705 I got her the 505...kind of an impulse buy. She likes to fish and always comes with me, and also likes to pull the slot machine handle once in a while, so I thought she might take to the metal detecting to get that type of fix (never knowing what you might catch, win or find). I think it may also be more work than she thought it was going to be. BTW I did get a Bounty Hunter pin pointer but have since ordered the Pro Pointer. Heck, maybe I will just upgrade it to another 705 with the smaller 6" coil ! Thank you all for your thoughts !

I would keep both.

With a XT-70 and a 705 in my arsenal, putting on a different type coil on each and going out hunting with both.

Gives me useful options in the field.

Good Hunting
