Air Testing the EXII

I was running various targets past my new (used EXII) and I noticed that the cross hairs like to jump a bit and the tone is a bit less than uniform even with good targets like silver dimes and musket balls. Yet, when I ran the same targets past my X-1 probe the cross hairs locked on and the tones were indeed uniform. Why is that?

Maybe easier to get exact dead center of the coil with the probe? With the coil maybe harder to get exact center.
Just guessing
