My oldest once tried to go out dressed like [in my mind] a... well leave that to your imagaination. Then she tried to get cute; No go from dad. Then she tried " You were young once dad, weren't you?". My response.... good grief, on one of my first dates, that DAD had a choppin axe stuck in a gum stump and asked me what it meant.....foolishly, I said, it means to have her home on time and he said, and not pregnant

I can remember my Father reacting the same way when my sister dressed like that...funny now, but not at the time it happened. Our parents were smarter than we gave them credit for. and we also didn't have much problem with them.
When they wanted to know what time they had to be home I would ask them what time they thought was proper. They would say, meekly, '10:30??" or something like that and I would usually add an hour and it would just thrill them. They would normally lowball the time and I could give them a little more. They loved it.
Another trick I used was to set an alarm clock for the time they were suppost to be home. I told them I was not gonna stay up but they had better be home in time to turn it off before it woke me up. It never went off.
I also told them that if they were at a party that and it was not a place they wanted to be, just call and I would get up and pick them up, no questions asked. That made them feel safe.
I told them that if they were with a boy and he drove like and idiot or drank to just get out of the car and call me, don't ever get back in the car. Carolyn did that once and had no more problem with that idiot. I had a word or two with the boy and felt confortable that he would show a little more respect for my daughter after that. He was just hot rodding and she walked home. She is my middle daughter and tougher than hell. She could have kicked his arse if she had wanted to but she was in her lady stage.
That is the girl that kicked the crap out of Eddie on the bus and the girl in high school. There were only seven boys in her senior class that could beat her in arm wrastling <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol"> She hates it when I bring it up now though <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=""> She was not a big girl but freakishly strong.
I am sure they got away with stuff but they were smart enough to keep it away from me.
I told them one thing and started when they were very young. If you want to do something you would not want your mother to know, It is wrong. Many kids have a problem knowing what is right and wrong and I always figured that was a good guide..

I was blessed with only one daughter and she only really tested things twice that I can remember. My son however was/is another story. She did complain a lot about strictness but after she was in college waiting to be married she had a talk with her mom and dad. She told us that she was thankful for the upbringing she received and had seen what a loose lifestyle had done to some of her friends. Now she is the mom to two little girls whom I'm sure will put her to the test too. Great story Linda, thanks!

I had thought about it, I could have slept more! I never could go to sleep until they were home safely. I too, told them the thing about drinking, driving, etc. and I was only called on a couple of occasions. I would rather it be that way than for them to be afraid to call. It's one of the hardest things I ever had to do, and that's seeing one of them drive off with a boy for the first few times! I completely understand where my daddy was coming from! But it was a lot different back then. A "wild" time was if someone could confiscate a bottle of Boonesfarm Strawberry Hill wine. We didn't have all the other stuff to worry about. I just hate that my grandchildren are having to grow up in today's times. It's really scarey to me, and can only pray that my daughters and husbands can lead them down the right path! So far, so good. Jordan is the oldest at fifteen and he is a sophmore in High School with a 3.8 grade average. He is just now becoming active in social functions, but I truly believe he knows right from wrong and will make good decisions. <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt="">

scare the crap out of you! <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=""> My dad was an avid hunter as you all know, and everytime I had a new boyfriend show up, he made it a point to take them to his gun cabinets, and showed them all the guns, and would tell them what they were best used for. I really don't know what all he would tell them, but I know their eyes were opened much wider going out of the house than they were coming in. They were all afraid of him???????????? <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt="">

don't you just hate it when they pull the old "weren't you young once" routine?? Dang, I tell them I sure was,and it wasn't that long ago no matter what they think, and that's the reason I had the rules I had! I can completely identify with your dad.When my daughter started dateing I went out of my way to put the fear of God into many of the young men who found the way into my house.Had a few "private" chats with a couple of them......just a little reminder of what I was prepared to do to them if my daughter was in any way harmed.....
