An idea of mine for a winter project.

Maybe someone has already done this. But I was thinking about making a wind operated coin tumbler for out in the yard. Its always windy,it seems, in my large yard with not many trees. The only tumbler I have is the large type with a huge motor, makes alot of noise. Not that I cant go get a better one ,but,,, build one because it could be cool and because I can.:clapping:
I have it pretty much worked out. my only problem that comes to mind is how to control the high speed in high winds.

Also thought about one for the back of the truck, little more difficult. Jeff foxworthy would have a good time with that.

If you're going to use pulleys on it and it will be belt driven just use different size pulleys for speed reduction.

Bill

Yes pulleys and belt driven. I have the complete lower end already made. Barrel, rollers with a pulley on the end, all it needs is a power source. A windmill with a pulley,,, which I dont have yet.

I want to set this up once for all wind conditions and not need to worry about it.

I do have different size pulleys, guess I could set it up ,to where, with high winds the barrel would be going around at the proper speed, thus at lower wind speeds it would hardly be moving. That I think ,would be OK.

How about something like a belt tensioner, the higher the speed the tighter it gets against the belt, the slower it goes the loose it gets. just a thought.

- - I love winter projects and yours sounds like a blast.
With any luck, it will work well. You just have to get it on YouTube.

Maybe, if your real lucky, it'll take off down the road on it's own, go careening into town and scare the blazes out of the "reg'lar" folks.

"Wind Driven Coin Tumbler Runs Amok - film at 11"

Sweet,, that would be cool to make the news:yo: "Who me,I never seen that contraption before"

But have faith I'm fairly crafty. I talking where the bottom part is enclosed and locked.where the loot is. Has the belt running through a slot. I could tell people it runs my mercury light. And that sound (like money rolling) is all the change I'm saving.

Yeah I thought about that but it may not fit in well with varing speeds. All a belt tensioner is is a simple clutch..

Bill

When you build it we will want to see it posted on here

Why not stick a generator onto your windmill and reduce your electric bill while your at it? I was recently at a new home (a mansion really) site up on a hill where the owner was installing a 1 MW wind turbine. Big sucker. The contractor would only tell me it cost over a million bucks. The thing will power the whole place which consists of about 8 buildings and still have loads of capacity left over which can be sold back to the grid. There are big tax breaks too. I know another guy who has a solar system on his house. While the utility company limits the amount of power he can return to the grid, he has many months where the system actually makes money. He's now installing one on a 22 unit apartment building he owns.

Interesting project. Hope to see some photos.

Chris

I will definitly post some pictures. I want to keep it simple as possible, all I want it to do is tumble some coins while I'm out digging up more.

How about ..... On the old stationary bikes they had a wheel that you would tighten with a knob and it hits the main wheel to create a tension drag, You could tighten it just enough to not allow it to free spin out of control, so thats my 2 cents .Great idea, gary

John,, ifs thats your girl,,, shes perrty. not sure what them tires are for but,,,, shes pretty.your very lucky.

Me and my girl friend have been fighting some tonight because of these:beers: Not sure how its going to end up.

What's the brick for?

Bill
Its a dampener for the belt tension. The motor is mounted on a hinged platform, and the brick keeps tension on the motor at speed. Crude but effective. It's my favorite part of the system, in fact!

I wouldn't let that pretty woman, children or anyone I actually liked near the thing when it is running, however. I'm a safety regulator where I work, and that thing violates about half a dozen statutes. OSHA would have a field day with it!

I'm better now. Hmmmmmmmm,,, Note to myself: " DO not get on PC when been drinking" or at least "drinking heavily" Otherwise never see me on most weekends.I posted on another thread also last night, gotta go look see what I did.:punch:

Do they make a devise to blow into, breath test, before the PC will turn on?

I have a feeling I'm not the only one thats going to make a wind opereated coin tumbler.Think I could patten it? Call it a rock tumbler. You know ,with the high demand for this type item it could be a hit.:thumbup:
