An interesting find from across the pond

A friend of mine found this pierced coin from 1830 deep down in an English field. It may have been there some time or I guess the farmer may have deep ploughed at some point and that's why it was so deep. It looks like someone has scratched 'R' and 'D' on there - I hope 1830 isn't a rare issue?
