An interesting morning. 200+ year old coin found. Need your input.

It is so weird that early this year I hit the 4-5 sites that are within a mile or two from home a lot. I am now back to hunting them regularly, almost exclusively. Today I got the go ahead to detect a field I had been previously asked to not dig in until Fall. I found some very neat items. 2 wheat cents. A huge quartz pendant which is silver wire wrapped around a very large natural "Herkimer Diamond." Click on the photo to see the details in the quartz. One of my new favoite finds. A small wire ring with a tiny stone, marked 925. A large silver and enamel ring which is unfortunately flattened but still very pretty. One junk ring. I hate finding those cheapies. The flattened silver ring is the heaviest silver ring of 2008 (12.06g) and the wire ring is the lightest (.53g) for 2008 so far. The wire ring was DEEP and gave a loud signal. Someday I'll stop being surprised by how deep my 2500 detects. Many targets today were 6 inches or deeper. My Lesche is 6 3/4 inches long so its easy to tell.

The real treasure of the day is that Chinese Cash Coin which is my first of those. I went to my coin site and identified it as from the Chien Lung period and that it dates from 1736-1795. There was a population of Chinese living in this area some time ago. They may have lived where the park is now. I'll research it over the Winter.

I need your help now. Specifically, I'm looking for advice about straightening out my bent rings. I assume I'll need a ring mandrel but what else? If you have a source for a fairly priced kit or mandrel please let me know. I am also looking for a decent ring case. Where do you guys get yours? I am going to put my silver and nicer junk rings in it. I'd like one with more than one level or that folds out. I have looked all over locally and nobody has one.

Got around 50 clad coins too and a whole mess of old style pull tabs. I am going to do the other half of the field over the weekend. My back has been bothering me a bit lately and 2 hours is all I can mange lately.

First off, congrats on the really nice finds. I have found a few rings like that (flattened). I would suggest anyone who detects buy a ring mandrel and a leather hammer. I have both. I have taken flat rings like that at brought them back to a perfect roundness. You can buy them pretty cheap on Ebay.

Mandrel and Hammer

That's the answer I wanted. I wasn't sure what one would hit a ring with to imart the necessary force. What is your technique? This ring is heavy and thick. Still possible in your book?

Chris

I try and open it just enough to get it started on the mandrel and then just tap it out. Here is one I fixed. I have straightened out worse.

Either we are hunting the same site or our Ace 250's are in harmony so far away. Ha Ha..I found the same ring as yours. How crazy it that. Nice finds by the way..zaxfire69

I wasn't using an Ace 250 but maybe all Garrett machines are in synchro-mesh. I have never seen one of those junky rings for sale anyplace but I have found about a dozen of them. They are so cheap.

Chris

I am guessing a lot of small taps moving slowly around the ring? Nice job by the way. Maybe I'll just send my bent rings to you.

Chris

Ah I should have kept reading. Yeah they are kinda junky. I have found several myself. Take it easy bending the ring. I broke a silver one trying to straighten it.

Yes...get a ring mandril. get a steel one, not an aluminum. They sometimes take a hard beating. You will also need a smaller plastic hammer/mallet. Of course don't forget a rotary tool like a Dremmel. You will also need some small felt wheels and jewelers rouge to get those rings looking brand new.

Where to buy? Look in the yellow pages and look under jewellers supplies. If you live in a smaller city where there might not be any, try GOOGLING ring mandril and you will get lots of suppliers. The good news is that they don't really cost a whole lot. You can also use a pry-bar end or large a metal punch. Good luck. These tools are a great investment.

And who knows....you may want to try and make a coin ring or two this winter (if you even get winter/)

If you haven't seen these instructions for coinrings, here's my article I wrote for Western & Eastern Treasures some years back. You will have to manually type this url, as this form won't allow it to be linked.

i say the same thing cwilk about the depth my garrett gti 1500 gets everytime i take it out too a old site :garrett:
