I buried a clad quarter in my yard at 12". There is little mineralization or EMI. Thought I'd try all three of my machines (see below). Each one was maxed out to the best of my ability, and each had the standard coil (Deus with 11"). Standard programs as well as custom were all tried as was pinpointing. All frequencies were tried for the two machines that have a choice.

Results:
V3i.................intermittent weak beep, no VDI, no bars. Prob would not have noticed during hunting.

CTX 3030.....Target circle in the right place, no VDI, no sound, no red build-up at all. Would not have noticed during hunting.

Deus.............Weak hits on Goldfield and my custom program. If you were going slow you MIGHT have stopped to check them out, especially Goldfield.

Just my yard, my conditions, my settings, my skill. Your mileage may vary.

And here is a result I can't even believe.....the 9" HF coil at 28 khz hit it better than all the others! Impossible but there it is. Good sound and a semi-accurate VDI. Admittedly, it was jacked up to a very sparky level, one you wouldn't run with, but it did it.
Amazing.

Interesting, the round or elliptical ?

Round. I'm pretty sure most will not believe my results so if you have the 9" round HF I strongly suggest you try it for yourselves. I would love to hear your results.

The standard coils 9 and 11 will hit silver better at depth than clad coins. I have a 10 inch clad quarter and it will hit it but it likes the 12 inch half silver, around 10 inch silver merc dime it will hit too. This is in a test garden with a ton of emi. I don't have the 9 hf coil but I got the 5 x 8 coming this week sometimes and will put it through some test. btw ive gotten my 9 inch coil to hit a 14 inch largie before in my garden. In my soil the which is sandy light soil the deus had just a little edge over the ctx on depth.

Glad to hear the impossible, or at least unlikely, has happened to someone else. Thought I had done something wrong.
:beers:

Those nine inch deus coils are something special. I had 15 inch attack coil for my at pro and a 13 inch tornado too and the deus nine will get better depth than those on the at pro. I always heard the bigger the coil the better the depth which is true., but deus coils can increase transmit power unlike others and imo that why they are so deep . I wish they would put a tx setting of 4 on them lol

What machine did you use the 9" HF coil on? The V3I?

I believe hes talking about the new deus hf 9 inch coil.

Any idea how to fix that ctx problem I've noticed that a few times. I hate to think what I've might've missed because of that. Thanks.

Now find a quarter that's been buried 50-100 years...might open your eyes.....
I got a question what do you mean by that statement ?? I have heard statements like that before alluding I believe to that machines WONT hit them as good ?? Is that what you meant too?? If not please disregard and this is for others to answer.. I still trying to figure out how to test that theory as I don't know the exact spot where any coins are off hand that have been buried that long (I have never seen a video of anyone testing that theory either so where did that theory start?) . I have heard the halo effect theory too .. I will show a couple I have found in the wild that have come from extreme depths the first was 9 and for its size that's very deep and the second was 9 or 9 1/2 , and I wont post them but I have personally dug a wheat 11 inchs and watched my buddy do the same and yes I know how to measure I used to be a carpenter. The deus is the deepest detector ive seen in my soil tested against ctx, aka sorex pro which is very close, etrac, racer 2, nokta relic,at pro, at gold, mx sport, .. . I know freshly buried target test are open for debate and some say minelabs get deeper on old targets buried never been able to test that theory either so don't know if its true or not.. I do like to test things because some things in detecting are myths just busted one the other day about a setting on the deus. I got another one , usally the bigger the coil the better the depth correct and a a 9 inch coil should only hit a target around 8 or 10 inchs to old school figuring. When I started testing the deus with the 9 inch coil and was showing the extreme depths I had a man basically say yeah right! . Why ? I think because they were stuck in the old tech where a 9 inch coil wasn't even capable of doing that and when he saw it hitting targets up to 14 inchs couldn't believe it and going way beyond its nine inch dimension. If I took your statement wrong then please disregard and this post is for the others that make those statements and mean that machines wont ,cant , or have a hard time finding deep stuff that's been buried for a long time. Lets see some real world testing to back those kinda statements up. I mean I have found colonial shoe buckle at 13 inchs and other items at extreme depths , what makes coins different?? If that theory was true then how did I find these items or how does anyone find old items that are deep for that matter?? Don't make no sence to me but hey what do I know... is that another metal detecting myth ?????

got cha I took what you said wrong , I heard others make statements about what I was taking about above. Just trying to find my way in the detecting world.

Freshly buried coins disturbs the ground matrix and looses that important conductivity path. Much like cutting the electrical cord to an appliance and leaving a few frayed wires to conduct electricity. Just won't work well.

I know some detectors wont hit freshly buried coins but the deus will hit 12 inch silver just buried... How do you test that theory about the ground matrix?? I have never been able to prove or disprove that but have heard it before.

With your mighty Deus

Take a quarter, find a clean patch of ground, place the quarter 'on edge', push it into the ground with the top edge showing right on the surface, in plain sight. Try hitting it from all directions and see what happens.

Randy, Randy---I know you believe that mis-informed story with all your heart.----The way you have told it MANY times that your friend & his Deus couldn't hit a coin on edge (and in you sweet Kansas ground, no less).------I hate to burst your bubble---but---my Deus could KILL coins on edge--whether they be stuck in the top of the ground or buried.----And not just a huge quarter either but A DIME--A DIME also!! (on top, or buried)----Sorry but I couldn't keep my mouth shut this time--heard your story TOO many times!-------I don't know what you two were doing or if your friends Deus was "ka-put"---but your story is "just not right"!-----------Del

Del Del Del..

I first became aware of the coin on edge problem with the Deus by reading an article by Des Dunne of Minelab fame, This was on the NASA Tom Forum where he goes by the name Des D...Then I tried it with a friend's Deus and saw with my own eyes and heard with my own ears that it did a double beep with a side to side sweep which is a normal response. But what happened next was shocking..a lengthwise sweep it didn't make a good report and sometimes going across it ,maybe made a burp or two but nothing I would dig. So Ya, I wouldn't have one of those overpriced machines, even if someone gave it to me.
