On the way into the cabin site we passed a cliff that just did not belong where it was. The area is all lava boulders and lava flows. There is jus no other types of rock above ground any where but in the stream beds. It is obvious the quartz and gold had to have come from somewhere. This is what the ground looks like everywhere else in this area. The flowers.by the way, are called busquit root. The Indians used this plant like potatoes by digging the roots, drying them, and pounding them into flour. They have a strong smell that to me means spring, The ground is all lava,

On the way out of the cabin, you can see the cliff of river rocks and quartz on the right.

On the base of this cliff is a creek that is running enough to do a little panning, so we did.

We found little in the stream bed, but up the hill a way you can see the rocks that indicate an ancient stream bed, If you like geology or gold panning you know what this means.

I climbed up to the gravel on the hill and was amazed at what it was like. Every kind of rock in Idaho was in this old streambed. It looks like a great place to find goodies!

I classified out a pan full of this material and Jim was able to pan out some color. We will have to go back and spend some time here before the stream dries up for the summer. I was just looking around on the hill side and eyeballed this nice Idaho garnet. It is 5/16 across and was laying on the top of the gravel.

Idaho is called the Gem State, and we live in Gem county, so it should be no surprise. We had a good scouting trip today. Elson, you ready?
