Another First From The Cane Field

mcuch

New member
Went back to the cane field for a bit this morning and got another first. Wasn't there more than a few minutes and dug up what looked like it could be either another flat button or a coin, got my spray bottle and sprayed water on it and it seemed to be some kind of coin. Got home and tried cleaning it up best I could, it's in real rough shape but could make out a 5 surrounded by a ring of stars. I looked it up and found out it was what all of you already know from that description, found my first shield nickel, just can't tell what the date is but I'm happy knowing what it is. I'll try getting a pic of it and a couple of other finds put up, one of the finds I have no idea what it is, maybe one of you will know.

Great find !!!! That would be a first for me too !!! Congrats on the Shield Nickel

WOW Maybe a lot more is there than you originally thought.even being scraped I believe you said.

Yeah, I think I'm on a section that got left alone from the leveling out. This part is adjacent to a bayou, I consider it a canal myself but here they call it a bayou. I believe there use to be a big barn somewhere near the area from the early to 1800's, maybe even the late 1700's. All I know is, I'm going to pound that area as hard as I can before spring time when the sugar cane starts growing and ends the hunting there. I hunted some in a couple of different area's there and didn't get much of anything. I'm hoping that there are more silver coins hiding in the dirt waiting to be found, be nice if there happened to be a lost gold coin or two from the hey day of that plantation just waiting to be found too!

Good job plucking a Shield nickel. They don' fare very well in my ground either. Good hit! HH jim tn

Thanks, just glad I'm able to start hitting on some good stuff, from what I can gather, that area has been hunted and I've seen a few people there within a week and a half, one guy I talked with a few days ago that was there when I got there was using an XP Deus, he was hunting near the spot I found that shield nickel. Guess he over looked it or just wasn't digging iffy signals, either way, glad my F75 is hitting the mark, sure liking that detector, more and more everyday!

them Tennessee boys be showing up at your house (sometimes they drag along friends from Va.).

Shall we, vlad, make a little trip to the cane fields? Ole mcuch thinks his spot is safe, ha. What he doesn't know is the one right next to the one he is hunting has some buried gold on it. Maybe it is time to drop a bit further south. HH jim tn

Great find. Those shield nickels are as rare as hen's teeth. I've heard they make date restorer for nickels, never tried it myself but have seen it advertised on eBay.

.......the guys from Tennessee will be bringing dirt-daubers from Georgia, and they travel with backhoes.

Cannon Balls and nice size fragments is what my hunting buddy wants to find the most, it's like the holy grail for him. Mine would have to be a belt buckle and Louisiana State Buttons. If I get lucky enough to find any of that, you will hear me hollering all the way to where your at. Those are any gold coins!

You'd have to find someone that would give you permission to hunt their property, battlefield section is off like MIT's to detecting and they have a cemetery there in Port Hudson
