Another mystery coin

Tagamet

New member
This almost seems like a joke, but are there two headed coins? I found one today that is about the size of a half dollar and on both sides there is a man's head in profile facing to the left. It's not totally clean yet, but I don't want to damage it. The patina looks like it's copper and *part* of the inscrition above the heads include the letters BRIT:OPIN? There are some letters before the letters mentioned. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Tagamet

Frakly thught it was a plu unti I got it home. I have to hold it at just the right angle to even make out the image and use a 10x Mag to read the letters, so I doubt that a pic will help much. I'll soak it in olive oil over night and try for a pic or scan soon.
Thanks,

Hi Tagamet,

Here some years ago a gentleman came across a fifty cent coin that had been mistakenly struck with heads both sides, it went up for auction and caught around $15000, and that was about 10 -12 years past, so you might have found a rare gem, keep your fingers crossed.

Looking forward to the pic......Boony

Your lips to God's ears! The one edge is slightly "flat" - not perfectly rounded...hmmm, mis-strike? LOL I know it's unlikely, but I got through high school, so stranger things have happened...
Thanks,

It may be one of those two-sided magician's coins. People will occaisionally bring them to the coin shop and think they're "mules" or ssome kind of rare coin.

Anything Popeye wants (evil grin).
Actually, it softens the gunk on the coin so when it's rubbed a bit or brushed with a toothbrush, the dirt doesn't scratch the coin as much.

It turns out that the coin is a British farthing from 1952. The images are supposed to be of the queen when she was younger on one side and "mature" on the other. Enough gunk melted away with the olive oil to make out some of the lettering and trace that on the internet.
As with most of the things we "unearth", it's value is not monetary, but is in the fun of finding it.

Sorry, but I think the mystery is still there.
The 1952 British Farthing has King George VI (the Queen didn't appear on them until 1953) on the obverse and the reverse has a bird (wren) under the date.
A picture would help us positively identify it.
