Another New Member

Hello everyone, my name is Dave. I have been away from this hobby for a long time. It seems life had always been in the way. But now with the economic situation my business is so slow I decided to semi-retire. This has allowed me free time to pursue this wonderful hobby. My first detector I bought (and will always have a soft spot for) was a BFO. I loved that motor boat. It was with this detector I found a nice 3/4 lb silver bar in an old rotted leather pouch, as well as many silver nuggets found underneath a tramway that was used to carry ore from a mine over a mountain and down to a no longer existent town. (Don't ask where) It was a sad day when this instrument was stolen in a burglary. The next detector I purchased was a Garrett Master Hunter VLF/TR. This was a great machine but unfortunately it too was stolen in another burglary. Next up was the GTA 1000. I really like it as a simple grab and go machine for fast searching. The GTA 1000 however fell short on prospecting so I bought a Scorpion Gold Stinger in the 90s. What can I say about it that you all don't already know. For me, it's my favorite. There's just something about those 10 turn dials (think BFO & MH VLF/TR) I love. When you think about all of the Garrett detectors that have come and gone over the years it's quite a statement that there still is one that has remained the same and is still in production. Reminds me of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". And last but not least I also have a Master Hunter CXIII w/Power Master circuitry. It is a very capable machine which I very much enjoy using. Aw heck, I like all my Garrets and look forward to using them more now.

Sounds like you are a fairly well polished Garrett user. And I have to agree with you 100%.....there's just something about that Scorpion. But you got to put in the time to learn it. Those who have just love it.

Alright!Welcome aboard!This is a wonderful community and a great place to share info!
I've got a couple of old Garrett BFOs. I swing 'em around every now and again just for fun. The sounds that they make scare the crap out o'the cats!
I've got three GMHs one of which is the CXIII w/PowerMaster. Incredible machine! I love that true all metal mode. It was actually my main machine years ago 'til that GTI 2500 came out. I still swing it around periodically. I've had three different GTA 1000s years ago(Ultra/PowerMaster,etc.). Legendary machine. I regret letting them go, but I did back when I upgraded to GTI(ten+years ago?)
And the Scorp? Hey, that's what we're all here for,right? Just like you say, If it's not broke, don't fix it. I could'nt agree more.

It's good to have one more. WELCOME! Scorpion users are few and far between, that's ok, more for us to dig on! I think that some out there want that new machine that will dig your hole, plop the find in the pocket and fill the hole.

Kevin, it's easy to be sold on a winner and Garrett has proved to be just such a company.

John, know what you mean by time spent learning. I have time in on the Scorpion but there is still a lot more curve to climb I'm sure. I think one thing that helped me with the Scorpion first on was my familiarity with the 10 turn dial and manual ground balance of my previous detectors. Also, understanding the nuances of various sounds to listen for made the Scorpion more natural for me.

Dig'em All, oh yeah, that all perfect machine. Kind of like Rodney Dangerfield's golf bag in "Caddyshack", comes with your favorite beverage.

Your user name reminds me of when I first got my Scorpion. The first day I had it I went to a Park to see what it would do. This Park had a full time ranger that lived on site. I intended to initially ask permission to use the detector but he was not there. After waiting what seemed like forever I couldn't resist the urge any longer and pulled the Scorpion out and went to it. About three hours later the ranger showed up and told me in gruff manner "metal detecting is not allowed at my Park". Expressing my disappointment I asked where the garbage cans were. He asked what for, giving him a bag nearly full of trash I told him that since this was his Park then the trash in the bag must his as well. He asked me where I got it and told him I dug it out of the ground. He said where, to which I said all over. He looked around and said he could not see where I had dug. To that I proudly said and you never will see where I dig. He handed the bag back to me and said when I was done metal detecting I could place the trash in his garbage cans by his house and that I could come and dig his trash anytime I wanted to.

Like the comment to the Ranger. Also noted how you take care of your holes. Same here. Its great to let the ones normally against us MDers, to see what we can do. This way they are more then happy to let us come back. BZ to you.
