Another Question for Andy

Hello Andy,
I read your magazine articles all the time, and enjoy them.
I am contemplating the purchase of an Explorer II and possibly an Excalibur too. Its a serious chunk of change, so I have been researching them online.
I have had several high end detectors, starting out years ago with the Garrett GMH CX III, yes, the talking detector! Went to an XLT, and currently own a Fisher CZ-6A, while Wifey has a Garrett GTAx-1250.
I had a very cheap Radio shack once, and a couple of middling no-name models. None has impressed me.
I am pretty tired of digging corroded zinc cents and pull tabs. I want a better idea of what I have found before digging.
Thus, I am looking at the Minelab Explorer II, with its tone ID and dual digital reads. I figure with experience, I will be able to skip the dang pennies, and identify the gold jewelry from the aluminum junk.
But when I read user reviews, I see a significant percentage complain about noise, to the point of confusion with their EXPII's.
I have occasionally had problems with detectors "singing" or playing "music" but its rare. Usually its power lines or I hit the sensitivity unknowingly and knocked it so high its unstable. But we are talking maybe 3 times in a 12-15 year period.
Is there some common fault in a significant percentage of the EII's? Is there some common mistake these people are making? I would really like to know before I drop $1000+ on one. If I am going to be disappointed, I could do that for a lot less.
Aside from that, any technique tips for the EII? Go slow? Go fast? Whatever.
Thanks for your time,
Brian
