any advice about detecting (virgin digger)

im just getting into detecting,so i have a lot of questions, i will be doing beaches ive read all the reviews on the GARETT SEA HUNTER MARK 2 at first i was gonna buy but after reading the forums it seems i have to re-think my plan of attack due to people saying its good and then other people saying its not good? and were is the best place to buy ? from the states its a lot cheaper but what about customs charges anyone ever had any experience with these if so how much ? i have 600 pound to spend, ive looked on ebay but im a little unsure and it is a lot of cash.
would be greatfull for any help and advice. have fun

Where do you live?
Will you be in the water or only on the dry sand?

A BeachHunter ID from White's might be a better choice because it's VLF and not a PI; a VLF has better discrimination then a PI.
VLF= Very Low frequency
PI= Pulse introduction (or similar)

A Minelab Excalibur might also be better, I don't think a PI is a very good choice for a newbie.

If you are new to metal detecting.....don't buy a PI unit such as the Mark II. It is a deep detector, works exceptionally well in high mineralized soils/saltwater. However, it is more for professional hunters in specific environments. There is a long learning curve, and if you have no prior metal detecting experience, trying to learn a PI is a lessen in frustration. Are your beaches salt water? Most single frequency have some issues with salt water. You have to turn the sensitivity down. This will probably result in some depth loss, but if you are searching for fresh drops, that shouldn't be a problem. Surprisingly, the ACE 250 has done well on some salt beaches.
