Any advice for a XP Deus noob?

Hey all. I just upgraded from an AT Pro to the XP Deus, received it last week (shout out to Ed at Treasure Mtn!). I knew it was going to be a lot different than the Garrett, but I guess I didn't realize how different. I did a little playing around in my parents' yard this past weekend, and found several coins I didn't get in previous hunts. Today I went to a honey hole I've had, an American Legion property that's seen ball games and dances since the 40s. It's really trashy as you can imagine, lots of beer bottle caps, metal soda caps, pull tabs, etc. Anyways, I got skunked.... as you can see from the photo, all I found was trash. I tried several different programs, both the pre installed ones, and some I found online..... those caps and cans just ring up so good. It's possible I really cleaned up the good targets in my previous hunts, but surely I didn't get everything. I've also noticed that TID numbers are pretty different between the Garrett and the XP.... pull tabs were ringing up mid to high 70s on the Deus, where on the AT Pro it was 50-60.

Any tips you can share with me? I've been watching a lot of videos, and I just received the Deus Handbook by Andy Sabisch, I've started it, but not too far in yet. Thanks for any pointers for this noob!

I have a relic program that you can try and see if you like. You can find the post if you look down through them,I also talk about garys sifter program which is good for thick iron. I have a thought on the deus and switching programs all the time the deus behaves different in each program because of disc, reactivity, tones, freqeuncy ,etc .... which makes targets sound different and changes the numbers too. Listen to a pull tab in 7kh,12kh and 17kh you will see what I mean.So if you change programs all the time it will take for ever to learn or worse yet you might not ever learn it. If you are a coinshooter CZ might chime in and give you a program. I have used the full tones audio since I got my machine and I am used to it, I would use full tones in whatever program you choose. I hunt in stuff like you got in your photo all the time with my relic program and it will handle it well. The deus is a audio machine and when you get time under your belt you will be able to tell by the AUDIO alot of times if its junk or a coin in my game I dig it at most of the time but I do pass some junk targets later in the day sometimes. There are no magic programs, some just work better than others for different senarios. good luck hope that helps one thing I will say dont rely on the numbers like you did with the pro, rely on the sounds (numbers second) there is a ton of info in the tones (full tones) of the deus. keep at it you will be speaking deus in no time!

You might try the x-y screen, rusty cans should appear like the image on page 43 of Andys book.

Yeah, I just got to that part in the book. I think that screen would be a bit much for me right now. lol

Thanks, I'll look through and try to find that relic program of your's. I do have Gary's sifter program, and I tried it today but was getting the same response from the bottle caps. After reading a bit in the book tonight, I wonder if adjusting the Silencer would have helped. Thanks for your insight!

I would never raise it above zero it affects depth after that, I will tell you this you might as well get used to digging some junk for awhile and your ears will start to get in tune with it. hh and gl did you watch Garys expert training videos?

I have been watching the videos, yes.

I about dug myself to death when I started, digging deep iron ,cans etc. One day I was hunting and it started to click , that day will come for you too.

If you are going to hunt relics , you are going to dig a bunch of that stuff with the Deus. Then again , if you're going to hunt relics you're going to dig a bunch of that stuff regardless with whatever detector you use or risk missing some good targets , the Deus just sets you up to dig a little more. I would approach it by not trying to dig the trash in the first place by finding a spot which has less trash period , and digging the clad and jewelry until I became accustom to the tones(full) in the different frequencies and especially what is often referred to as the "round sound" the Deus will give you over quality targets. Use a factory program in 12 khz and learn the 4khz swap method for bottle caps . Stay with tracking GB for a while and don't worry about depth.

Find a relatively young modern park which will have less modern trash , set your disc at 6 or 8 and go hunt whatever is there for a couple of days before venturing out with exotic programs and digging your a$$ off. The ratio of "good" targets to trash will be much higher than a trashy old house some where and you might even snag a gold ring with a big diamond in it.

Try this,,,run basic 2 program,,,notch 0-65,,,this will cut down on junk.

Till you get your feet wetter.

Then you can expand your settings a bit.

one big thing that helped me a lot especially with rusty bottle caps is to have a program next to the one you are using but with 4Khz... I use 12 most of the time so having an identical program right next to it in 4K lets me tell the difference between rusty bottle caps and good targets. in 12K a rusty bottle cap sounds sooo good and vdi at around 94... switch to 4 and if the vdi stays about the same its a cap but if it lowers and sounds good then dig it. i can use this to help with other iron but get used to doing this for caps and it will help a lot.

Thanks for all of the tips everyone! It's slowly starting to click in my head as I read your tips, and through Andy's Deus Handbook.
