Any tips for little indians?

When I started metal detecting, my goal was an indian head penny. I know, seems like a relatively simple goal, but in 8 years, I am still looking. I have found hundreds of wheaties, loads of silver, nice gold rings, and some really strange items. I started out with an ace250, then bought a 350, and then moved up to an AT Pro. I have read that indians usually ring in like a zinc, and I have been digging everything from a vdi of about 75 up. Am I just not holding my mouth right? Also, I'm wondering if the places I am hunting have just been hit hard. I have found dozens of mercs and silver rosies, and even a barber dime, but only 1 silver quarter, and no silver any larger. I do find lots of wheaties and zincs though... any suggestions?
Thanks guys, and HH!
Darren

With the AT Pro look for the VID to be in the upper 60's, low 70's for indians. Just slightly below wheats. I have started digging anything that jumps from 65-high tone and have pulled up a few Indians. Beware the mid to high tone signals. They can be just about anything.

That probably explains why I haven't found any... I have probably swept over quite a few of 'em and just walked past them.
Thanks!
Darren

Indians sound Like a VDI of a Zinc Pinny, But with more of a smooth sound????? If you have no junk around????? Mickfin

A few weeks ago, I found my first Indian Head penny of the season. After a 5 month break due to winter, I was out of practice and getting frustrated. Then a few weeks ago I was near an old house, got a signal 68-69 and I actually said out loud without even thinking "that's an Indian". Sure enough I dug up my first Indian of the year, 1902.

I guess what I'm saying is, after you dig one it will be easier. Mine always show up in the 66-70 range. You could go to a coin shop and buy an IH penny to use as a tester. You can get common dates for a couple bucks, and it would be good to actually hear one.

good luck...

I think I will purchase one to test. I have just recently started digging anything that shows up lower than 75, so that would explain why I have been missing them. I remember when I first started detecting, I dug for over a year before even finding a wheatie. They almost get in my way now.
Thanks for the info, and happy hunting!

Yup...Injuns are tricky little buggers to catch...Most folks pass them by thinking bottle cap or some other trash target...if it rings 65-72, and is 4 inches or more...I AM gonna dig it!
