Any users have the Explorer??

Hello!! Does anyone on here also have an explorer 2? I was just wondering what the difference is between the 2? The coils are interchangeable if I am correct in what I am reading. I was also curious about the difficulty of this detector for a new user. My son wants a minelab but does not put the time in to learn an explorer so I said maybe the quatro would be good, we mostly hunt the dirt but want a machine that can perform on the beach also. Any help is greatly appreciated. Good Luck!!

I don't think I would recomend the Quattro to anyone "young". Don't know how old your kid is but have to be very patient with this machine. For a minelab most likely an Xterra would be a better machine. Even something like the Ace 250 or a white's IDX pro or such would be a great machine.

I have to agree with Mirage. The X-Terra would probably be a better nmachine for your son to start with. However, between the Explorer II and the Quattro, if he must start at the higher level, the Quattro would be much easier for him to master, even with the level of patience that most kids have. If he is patient, and willing to stick it out.....the Quattro is hard to beat.

My son will be 15 years old. He is very smart and because I use the explorer even though I am fairly new with it I figure I could help him out. I do not want a single frequency machine, I like the FBS because I think its great on land and in the wet sand and surf. I definitely want him to have a detector that can perform on the beach also. I have to study up on the quatro but it will either be a quatro or another explorer, I dont know yet. Thanks again for the help.

Hello Richg, my hubby has the Explorer 2, I have the Quattro. But I've used the Explorer also. My son is 15 years old and really keen in detecting. He has used my Quattro a few times and found some lovely coins with it. (he wears a couple of old Chinese coins around his neck that he proudly found!). I had to set the Quattro up for him before he started detecting with it. As the ground conditions can change, it takes a bit for him to understand what to do here, but with a bit of help and practice, he's getting the hang of it, and now, takes it out on his own and finds things. But he keeps his sensitivity down a bit, to keep the machine running more stable, so that there's not much nulling, and the recovery rate is a bit quicker. For his age, with time and practice, I believe your son could pick it up like the rest of us. Young minds have a way of learning a little quicker than us oldies! I believe the Explorer to be way over the top for someone his age though. It's just has too many variables. If you're willing to spend the money on a Quattro, and take the time to go out with your son, however long it takes, then yes, the Quattro, could serve him well, as long as he's willing to spend the time learning. Other than that, depending on his patience level, the other detectors mentions in the above posts would be great for him. I still prefer the Quattro over the Explorer for a few raesons, thought the Explorer is a fantastic machine, goes a little deeper on the goldfields here, and you can finely tune it with regards to discriminating. Hope I've help somewhat.
