Anybody else been fighting the winter cold and flu season? :stretcher:

Got a head cold mid December, turned into a prolonged cough that has yet to go away, that turned into bronchitis, and now here it is coming into the end of February and I think the cold is back.

You ever detect with a cold? All those water drops falling on the faceplate aren't from rain It was so cold in December and January that my nose ran into my mustache and froze into icicles when I was beeping. Scared all the dog walkers away. Which reminds me, "Don't kiss your honey when your nose is runny. Somepeople think its funny but it'snot"

I told my wife I think I'll have to buy another metal detector to get better. She doesn't agree with the treatment. She thinks I should just stay inside and keep her company until I get better. She is probably right.

Just wanted to introduce myself, sorry to hear about your poor detecting condition, a new detector would definitely help you
I'm a new F5 user and really like the machine, I tried your audio/threshold tip yesterday and it works a treat. I'm trying to eradicate the high tone over rusted iron problem without losing the functionality of the notch or manual discrimination above 3-7? I was thinking of trying a different coil but the problem may be in the circuitry? I'm really not sure as I've only been using the F5 for 4 weeks.
When your feeling better I would love to know your thoughts on the rusted iron signal, good luck

I tell you what...this detecting saved my life...seriously, great outdoor excersize, excitement, relaxation all rolled into one..I havn't felt this good in 20 years...maybe 30.... @20,000 deep knee bends and squats per year? probably 100's of Miles of walking? With a detector, sure..

Hi Foggy,

What type of high tone are you getting and what type of rusty iron is giving the tone? Since there are 3 multi tone modes on the F5, it helps to know what tone mode you are in and what tone the iron false falls into, and what type of item is causing the false.

But the best thing to help mitigate wasting time on iron falsing (on any detector) is to do just what you are doing, lowering your disc setting so that you can hear both the iron response and it's false non-iron report. However if the iron is consistantly bleeding over into the high coin dollar range, you can activate the 50cent notch and eliminate it.

You might also try adjusting your ground balance either a little negative or a little positive. It is suprising what ground balance settings do to target responses if you have mineralized ground. So you might include your ground balance numbers and FE304 readings as well.

High gain settings can also have an affect on iron falsing, as can ground moisture. Just lots of variables.

Thanks for the response, it's great to get talking to you. I can answer most of the questions you have asked, I will set it out below as clear as I can showing my usual settings.

Conditions:
Previously ploughed field, but now in its resting season, very short old hay and new grass, very wet, water logged in areas.

Base F5 settings: (I normally start with this setting)

Gain. 75-80
Threshold. 0 to +1
Tone. D2
Disc. Manual 3-7

Ground Balance:

I always ground balance manually, after pumping coil up and down, the right pane usually reads 65, I then manually adjust until left pane matches within 1-2 points and keep it that way!

FE304
This normally reads between 2-3 bars BUT in all honesty I haven't really paid too much attention to this, I will take note the next time I'm out and get a more accurate reading

The problem!
I'm getting the highest tone in D2 over heavily rusted iron, it could be an old bolt or just a flat piece of iron. When iron is heavily corroded it turns parts into a really bright orange colour, this seems to be the common denominator in all the piece's which give me the high tone. I have managed to get better results by keeping my disc between 3-7, I still get the high tone but it would be interrupted by the low grunt of the iron signal so I classed this as partial success. After a bit of practice I now know this type of signal to be rusted iron, but every now and again I get the solid high tone only and it turns out to be iron, IN or OUT of the ground? I can understand where and why I get the iron signal but can't understand where the high tone is coming from and why?
I hope this all makes sense to you Mike, if you need anymore info just give me a shout, thanks for your time. Just a thought, I'm so glad I have this machine, i wouldn't like to own a machine which you just turn on and everything is perfect! it does leave me wondering if discrimination is a gimmick rather than a useful tool?...... But I have to remember I am only into my 5th week of using

Foggy, you said.....very wet, water logged in areas

Water saturated and over-saturated ground will affect response and increase iron falsing. Not just iron either. Foil paper can mimic coin signals when in saturated ground, or standing water. So much of your falsing will come from that.

However, even in dry ground some iron will still false. The nature of the beast.

Foggy, one thing all of us detectorists have to deal with is iron. Iron masks, it falses, and it mimics. Round and large iron will mimic coins and high conductive targets,elongated and flat iron will false. We all have to deal with it, regardless of the machine. The more time you spend on the detector the easier it gets to identify the iron, regardless of how it responds. Wet ground enhances it's repponse, dry ground minimizes it, and after a while the ear can more easily identify it.

But that wet ground you are detecting in is going to make it harder.

Thanks for the reply, I totally understand, it's probably a sign of my inexperience! It's strange most of my finds have come from the high end of the field, where it is a bit dryer, I'm going to try the wetter end tomorrow for a while to see if I can learn something. If I find anything exciting I'll post it.
I will probably invest in a new coil in the near future as I only have the stock, I've been reading about a 13" ultimate coil made by Detech I think, it reads well, have you heard of this coil or used it? Talk to you soon and thanks again
