Anyone familiar with the orginial Silver Sabre? I have an issue.

Hello everyone. I decided to dip my toes into the Tesoro waters recently with the purchase of the original Silver Sabre. I got it cheap and just wanted to see if I enjoyed detecting with Tesoros. And I have very much so far.

The detector is/was fine, until this evening. I took it out to a field to get my detecting fix for an hour or so, but as soon as the coil hit the ground it started going crazy. It sounded like really fast Morse code and very scratchy. I have detected the same area when I first got it without any issue.

The grass was very wet from a recent rain, but should that make the detector go nuts? I even had max disc and minimum sensitivity. It wouldn't even work in all metal. The thing was just going crazy with the coil on the ground. When I lifted it off the ground it went silent, then back down and the craziness ensued.

Is this normal for an old model Tesoro or might it be a bad coil or something? It's fine in my house with the tv and computer on right next to it. No EMI issues whatsoever.

The coil is the 6" white concentric

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Try taking your Silver to a completely different location and see how it performs. Also you want to closely inspect the coil and cable for cracks...if possible change to a different coil and check performance. I would try these options first and go from there:shrug:

It was doing the same thing in my backyard, too. Nice and quiet inside, though. I only have the original stock coil, so I can't swap out. I'll give it further inspection. Thanks for the suggestions.

I HOPE it was an emi issue. I had a Silver Sabre and it went crazy like this. Sent it in 4 times and it would do just fine at the factory-at least according to them. It was NEVER repaired and if I had not had a dealer who witnessed the thing acting up, swapping it for a Silver umax, I would never have used another Tesoro again.

Could be a crack in the coil and the wet grass was causing it to go bonkers. My Silver Sabre Micro Max had the same issues and I sent it to Tesoro and they repaired the coil. Hope you can get it figured out, because they are a lot of fun to use.

Even an extremely small crack in the coil over wet grass can give fits as Kansan54 mentions. I've had it happen as well. Sent it in to Tesoro and they found the crack and replaced the coil with a new one at cost. I've also had some strange actions when the battery was near death.

Thanks for the advice. Maybe ill just send it in and see what Tesoro can do. It's a fun detector and i sure would like to have it operating properly.
