Anyone have a good pocket probe recommendation...

Hi all I have the EXll. I'm researching probes. I don't really know if I want to invest in the Sunray X1 right now until I know for sure that I will be happy with a probe. I've gotten feedback on the vibra probe as being pretty good. I'm also interested in depth and thinking a minimum of 1-1/2" ?? Any thoughts or suggestions would be great. Anyone got a favorite? Tiny tech, detectorpro, others I've read up on them and don't know what to do

merlin probe. I've had it for about 4 years and had no problems!!
You said something about 1 1/2" depth. Well unlike detectors where you want a lot of depth on pinpointers you dont. the merlin go's about 3/4" deep.
Here why you dont want a lot of depth. Or maybe I should say this is how I use it.
After cutting my hourse shoe shaped slot I hindge it over. I then scan with my detector to see if its in the "lid" or hole. If its in the hole I then take my merlin and start moveing it around to see what side its on. heres where you dont want a lot of depth. If it did, say 4" of depth how would you / I know whet side of the hole its on.
Hope this helps. If you have anymore questions about the merlin, feel free to ask
God bless

Ed,
I have bought and used several probes. I broke two of my Automax probes trying to dig with them and something that we all know that probes are not suppose to be used for, but most of us probably have at one time of another. I also have two Tinytecs and one Vibraprobe. None of these seemed to have much depth and since I am trying to concentrate on the deep coins now days I decided to try out the uniprobe pocket probe from Detectorpro. Kind of pricy, but if it goes as deep as they advertise, 4 to 6 inches then maybe I have the one I'm looking for. I'll be trying it out in the field this Sat for the first time and I will post how it works. HH.

Merlin SXL Pro is small works better than most and fits in your pocket..$70 to $80 bucks....Also like the nice light it has for dark deep holes..

I guess all Merlins differ or must be set correctly..
an inch plus is more like it with mine and several inches on large objects..

First off, will you be using this probe only with the Explorer? If so then I would go with the X1 probe. The X1 will give you about three inches on a coin and can be used with discrimination on or off as set by your detector. The X1 is actually a miniature coil and is controlled by whatever settings you have set on the Explorer. It also uses the same audio tone ID through the headphones as you would get with the standard coil.
The X1 can help determine if you have a legitimate target or an iron halo. This is done by waving the probe in the hole in discriminate on a questionable target. If you are on an iron halo it will null instead of sound out, if it sounds out chances are good it is a good target. Be careful though, I have had one target that nulled in discriminate with the probe but my gut feeling told me to keep going. I pulled a nail from the hole and rechecked, then got a great coin signal. The result was a merc dime.
If you want a good probe that can be used with any other detector the Uniprobe or Pocket Pniprobe both made by Detector Pro is a good choice. These are PI units and will sound on a coin at about three inches. The Uniprobe comes with headphones and a connector for a PI coil allowing you to make a complete detector out of it. You can also plug the Explorer into these headphones and hear both the detector and the probe. Another good choice but pricey at around $399 I believe. The headphones are very good quality as are all Detector pro headphones.
The Pocket uniprobe (about $200.)is also a PI unit and will get about three inches on a coin. There is no discriminate mode for either of the uniprobes. you can also plug a coil into the Pocket uniprobe making it a PI detector. The downside of the pocket uniprobe is that it won't play through your detector headphones. I made a micro headphone from a mini piezo speaker and velcroed it in my regular headphones which works ok but you have two wires running to the phones that way.
With any of the three mentioned probes you will no longer have to pick up your detector to see if the target is in the flap, dirt pile, or still in the hole. Once the hole is opened these probes should be able to get a signal on the target. On extremely deep targets you may find the need to remove some extra dirt to get a reading but that is not typical.

I have an Explorer XS and a Whites IDX Pro, I needed a probe that I can use with both machines. Later on I might get an X-1 for my XS, but for now the Treasure Mate is working ok, you can ground balance it and it works great in minerialized soil, gets about 2" in depth. TB

What I am thinking about is to bye "cl-PS $39 Probe Switch box has two 4 pin male connectors to attach two coils or a coil and a probe to switch between the two." from ://www.kamakazi.com/docsplace/ofimage/cblswtch.jpg and to connect 5'' coil, keep it on a small handle under battery compartment. With min. sensitivity it will give at least 5'' to pinpoint also could be used in narrow places

After I master the 10" if ever, then I would be interested in a setup like yours. It may be really helpful when you run into an area full of trash. Thanks for sharing that with us.
