Anyone know how to tell a real diamond from fake?

For one thing they are open in the back to let light shine thru, while many fakers are not...They are actually putting fakers on 10 and 14 kt and they sure look good..Jeweler can take one look with his glass and tell right off..They have an acid test also which is foolproof..Remember even though its a diamond color, clarity all add to its worth and like everything else in life there are expensive and inexpensive types...

There are also electronic diamond testers, but they're a bit pricey. In earlier days, if you could scratch glass with it, it was considered a diamond. Now I believe there are synthetics that can do that.

Just take it to a jeweler like I do and they will test it and tell you if it's real or not. I have never been charged for this service as most jewelers are more than happy to check it for you. HH.

Always get a second opion,Alot of people go to pawn shop's and are not always told the true value,a jewelery store is a good option, but always have a second opion,You don't want to hand over that 500.00 ring for 20 dollars,

Altho an electric diamond tester will say it is a diamond you also need an electric mossinite tester. The diamond tester may say it's a diamond, but the mossinite tester says no then you have mossinite, a space rock that looks like a diamond. A jeweler friend of mine bought a diamond at diamond price and did a heat test on it then took it to another friends pawn shop that had both testers. Guess what, mossinite! The police were looking for the man that sold the stone.
Remember- a diamond tester will only tell if it is fake. Ron

I have an electronic diamond tester which is what most jewelers use. It cost about eighty dollars at a jewelers supply.

This cost me almost $200 but no more guesswork. And I used it quite a few times last summer.
