Anyone using the X Y Axis display?

biggziff

New member
I've seen a few videos on using the X Y axis screen and it looks like it might be the ticket for ignoring trash. Anyone using it that could let me know what they think?

thanks

I cover the function in my book and it offers a piece of information that can aid in identifying trash in certain applications but there are drawbacks and limitations which I discuss. At least one person on the forum here swears it is the only mode to use when coin hunting but I wold be hard pressed to use that as the sole search mode - checking signals yes but not for the primary search mode.

XP added TID to the screen and had it remain even after exiting the screen as long as the unit remained powered up but there is a reason they did not make it one of the 10 search modes . . . . . it is useful but again, limited in some areas

I'd recommend watching the videos with a jaded eye as what you see on a bench test is not always what you get in the field.

Thanks, Andy. I did find another video that shows how the XY can produce jagged lines on good targets in air. I used it today as a backup to my "not so trained" ears and while I dug the stuff that had a warble to it and had wiggly lines, every single one of those, regardless of the TDI numbers, were junk. The only good one that had a good repeatable tone, straight lines and high (81 I think) TDI was a hole with 6 coins in it.

Progress, I think. What I need (or maybe what you need to create) is a video showing the intricacies of the tones and what they will probably indicate. That or someone like you near me that can hunt with me for a few hours. If you're ever near Binghamton, NY, I'll gladly buy you lunch and a beer to go play in the dirt for a bit!

The downside of the X-Y VISUALIZATION screen is that deeper targets produce very small lines on the screen so unless you have 20-15 vision or a magnifying glass with you, the only time it is of real use is on shallow targets . . . or to aid in identifying rusted bottle caps.

But as I have said before, if something works for you, by all means keep using it

I'm too new with this MD to determine if anything is working!

As so many have suggested...I'm trying to use the audio only. It'll come...eventually.

Thanks

I find it to be another tool that I use from time to time. It seems to help with some of the foil and bottlecaps etc......I can't use it all the time tho as it also thinks pull tabs are great......Like with most sophisticated detectors, there are several tools built in that can help you make your go/no go decision....to me this is one of those...

It has been mentioned before but the drawback for me is that the screen only works for relatively shallow targets. Personally, I look for the deepest signals. For those, the XY screen just doesn't work.

HOWEVER, if I am in a minefield of shallow pull tabs and bottle caps, the XY screen may come in handy.
