Are there any larger Concentric coils for the SE other than...

Excecerator and Coil-Tec make some as big as 18" I think

Mike

Hi Bryce, well the SE uses only DD type coils and there are several available from Coiltek, SunRay, Excelerator. Size is anywhere from 5.5" to 18". Ok I hope this helps you and I bet you will find the right coil for your type of detecting Bryce. God Bless.

All the other sizes I know of are DDs.

I think Charles(Upstate New York) made a couple of custom ones, but am not sure.

Think that 8" coil will be my next purchase.

It really depends on the soil. DD coils are much more stable in mineralized soil. They only see a fraction of the ground signal a concentric coil does and when you consider the Explorer has been tuned for DD's its not surprising concentrics are often too unstable in mineralized soil.

I built up to 13 inch concentrics, they are "good lord" deep on the test bench but can't deal with the soils around here in NY. I tried an 8 inch in Oregon where the soil is aweful and it was too unstable but the same coil worked "not too bad" in NY.

Now its possible to wind a milder coil but then what's the point, the coil would be more stable but you give up depth and sensitivity to small targets.

On the plus side there are many ways to construct a concentric coil, some of which are a cross between a DD and concentric and so while not a stable as a DD may be more stable than a classic concentric.

The prize is the unique cone shaped detection field of a concentric. In testing I found they are quite good at locking onto a good target with a rock solid signal when there is a piece of trash very close by that you do not even hear, I'm talking within the parameter of an 8 inch coil. So for trashy areas worked out with the stock DD coil a smaller concentric may very well make some finds. A small concentric coil may also allow you to run a lot of discrimination with less risk of missing good targets due to nulling on nearby iron or trash.

from what I understand they are supposed to get a little more depth in decent ground. I have a trashy area that has yielded a lot of silver so I'm itching to give the 4 x 7 eliptical excellerator a try. I think I will get the best depth with the 8" concentric though...if the ground will cooperate. I appreciate your response and input. It sounds as though you have done some pretty extensive testing.

Charles, about the concentric coils if because the Exp doesn't ground balance in the classic sense, maybe that is the reason your tests turned out like they did, that stability suffers. I do wonder how a 4 or a 5" concentric coil would work though, it may be a killer in iron trashy locations but we may never know.

see a larger one to buy, the one I have has a very accurate ID to six inches. I got a 4X7 I am selling, not much difference then the 7.5"..
