Dear Fellow Seekers,
Psalm 34 has lots of them. My spirit, my affliction, my soul, my feet, my eyes, my body, my life, my years, my strength, my bones, my enemies, my neighbors, my friends, my times, my alarm, my cry. But aren't neighbors positive? Not when my neighbors hold me in contempt. (v. 11) Aren't friends good? Not when my friends dread me. (v. 11) Isn't strength helpful? Not when my strength fails me. (v. 10) Isn't life a blessing? Not when my life is consumed by anguish. (v. 10) My, my, my. But there is a "my" in the middle of the psalm that can potentially offset every debilitating "my." "You are my God." (v. 14) That "my" becomes my rescue, my rock, my fortress, my refuge. (v. 2,4) That "my" is the hands into which "I commit my spirit." (v. 5) That "my" "saw my affliction and knew the anguish of my soul." (v. 7) That "my" "set my feet in a spacious place." (v.
That "my" hears "my cry for mercy." (v. 22) Which "my" do I focus on--my affliction and hence my alarm, or my God and hence my rescue? It's not really a matter of "Is my glass half full or half empty?" It's a matter of "Which glass am I drinking from?" My glass may at times be nearly empty, but my God's glass is always full. Perhaps my prayer ought not be, "Fill my cup, Lord," but rather "Pass me Your cup, Lord." My is a possessive pronoun. Perhaps it is better to be possessed than to be possessive. "I am Thine" is better than "I am mine."
