Art Nouveau Silver and more oldies

Howdy,

I went out again this evening - couldn't hold out until the weekend to try my luck at the site I've been searching; the weather is just too nice (and the ground to match).

Was able to find four more Wheats and no silver coins this outing. I lowered my IM mask setting down to 26 or 26 (thanks for the reminder, captn_se!) and just re-hit a few spots. I do think at least a couple of the Wheats came through because of it. No worries though; it was a short hunt and there's still stuff coming out. At least a couple of the Wheats were nice older ones.

But I did get kind of a higher-toned signal, but not screaming like a silver dime or quarter. Didn't quite sound like a Wheat, so I though maybe an Indian. It had some depth, sounded good at both angles, so I figured it was good to recover. I was surprised to see a large silver face smiling at me from the black dirt. The back side was caked with dirt, so I wasn't quite sure what it was.

After cleaning the back off at home, I could see it was marked Sterling Front, so that was cool. It seems very much in the art nouveau tradition/style to me, and it would certainly fit the time period of other finds there, so I assume it is an older piece. But I don't really know, and I don't really know what it is/was. A button or button cover perhaps? Any ideas? It's bigger than a quarter, slightly smaller than a half. Made for a good hunt though. Only about eight weeks left in the season now - crunch time!

Thanks for looking!

In my book that silver relic is a much better find than a silver dime or quarter - it's relatively unique and has tons of character! I just got a book on buttons - will try to locate 4 u! Great find!!

Neat find! I don't know if you will find this in a button book-may want to Google button covers. I'm not sure what else it could be. You're right - this kind of stuff is way more fun to find than most coins. HH

That's a really cool piece of silver, DF!!

Glad you tried out a little less IM.

8 weeks before your detecting season ends? Living here in S. Cal, we don't have any detector down-time. I'm not sure what I'd do if I had to put my machine in the closet for a few months. I guess I would eventually adapt, like many others do.

Keep it going!!! Let's see some more!!

That is a neat looking button (??). Take that to a lost of coins, for the conversation and the value it has in trying to discover what it is. You know what coin you have right away.
