In my home state of Georgia, I have hunted over thirty years for relics. Never, and I mean Never have I wittnessed one occasion where the State Archeologist, or any other Team of Archies, or even one solo archie, has excavated a Civil War site. 99% of all relics displayed in musuems are from priviate collections loaned to a particular establishment.
One thing that is for the most part not well published. Within the last year or so, I don't recall the exact site, But a Team of Archies excavated some Native Indian Burial grounds. They removed the contents, and true to their nature removed everything down to the last tiny detail. Once cataloged and photographed they moved the contents to a Musuem. Low and Behold the Natives, which were the original families of the Tribe sued the Archies in Federal Court, and to the surprise of all, the families won. The archies were ordered by the Federal Judge to return all artifacts back to the original site and make sure each item was replaced just as it was found... This was a big blow in the Archie world, and to many of them it was a unjust ruling.
I rather enjoyed the Archies getting a taste of their own medicine...
It's not so much the Archies are interested in the Civil War era, it's the fact they believe they are the only elite group that should be allowed to disturb the earth.
Honestly, very few Archies have a clue to the value of the relics we dig. I nearly fell out when one Archie stated the price of a spent bullet from the C/W. I find it amazing they have so much pull over something they know so little about.
I would love to see just one Archie, be able to tell me where I may find a GMI button, or better yet, tell me where the 125th NY Battery was located before the Battle of Kennesaw Mt., or where the Georgia brigades camped the night before the battle of Kolb Farm. As odd as it may sound, I know 20 people that can answer these questions without any hesitation. I dare say, the ordinary relic hunter has more knowledge of troup movements, and usually a better grasp of the people who fought the war than most any group of Archies.
If this were not true, as relic hunters we would come home empty handed on every trip. This alone shows me that the Archies could care less if all the relics were coverd by parking lots, because As I look at the postings of daily finds, I see a well rounded group of historians that have spent countless hours of painstaking research, leg work, divorces, traveling away from families, and thousands of dollars of equipment for the hobby they love.
I understand their are those that will trespass, and and those that will cary on illigal digging on protected lands such as National Battlefields and such, to this I say lock their A$$E$ up...
But what concerns me the most is simply this:
Our freedoms, liberties, and our right to the persuit of happiness are being taken away. I have seen where some have even tried to stop hunting and fishing in some states. Insanity ???
When I think of the first bullet or button one of my kids or nephews dug, I recall the excitement in their eyes and I remember the chicken dance they danced, a lasting memory in my life. And when I think about the fact that these Archies and the very people we put into office consider taking away this hobby, it gets my blood to the boiling point.
I sent E-Mails to the links provided, Of course the E-Mails were direct and to the point I have made here. I hope each of you have done likewise..
Best of Hunting to each of you,
Richard

D(VA)I have sent emails to some of the Big dealers in relics and their relic hunting clubs in Northern Va. The author of the propsed bill is in their area. They stand to loose there livelihood with the sale and buying limits to be imposed. No more relic shows as it promotes unlawful activity.
These proposed laws( va hb 2078 and 2079), as a layman reads them, prevents ANYONE from digging in the archeological "zones" (see va hb2079)that MAY contain items of historical significance. That to me means no real estate developer can put the first shovel in the ground as it may disturb possible items of historical significance. Thanks, lets keep pounding.
