assembling the Sov GT

Hi all, I have just got a GT . I have assembled the MD but was wondering where exactly does the hand piece locate. Is there a rule how far from the end of the shaft or how far away from the meter this should be positioned.Doesn't say anything in the manual.
Also , do I need to fully flatten the battery before i recharge them

The Hand grip is adjustable so you set it where it were it is comfortable for you.
You may notice it is hard to slide on if this is a new detector, many have a problem with it sliding on the first time. I just loosen the screws so the nuts don't fall out and use something to pry it open a little while sliding it on, once started it will slide on.

On the battery you just have to charge it up and you are ready to go. The light on the pack may only dim and not go out as the owners manual states. If it is not out or dim after 12 hours I would take it off the charger. The first charge or 2 may not last as long, but it will get better after it been charges a few times.

Good luck and have patience and a lot of fun as it is a great detector.

Hi Rick, thanks for that.
I am heading to the beach in the morning to have a play, Not sure whats the best way to set it up. This is my 1st detector. I will have a read of the manual, just have to work out if i go disc or all metal.
I just want to get used to it and try to work out what all the knobs do once adjusted.

Any tips would be appreciated ???????

Thanks

I never run all metal myself as it defeats the purpose of the Sovereign and its tones. With this the case the one toggle switch that says all metal/track/ fixed I will leave in the pinpoint position so when I need to pinpoint I just have to switch the other one to all metal. This toggle switch is only active when you are in all metal. On the all metal/iron mask on/iron mask off I run in iron mask on for my detecting and only switch to all metal to pinpoint. Band Freq I run freq 2, but 1 is OK too as this switch is just for the time you get some kind of interference. Silent search switch is if you like to run silent search, or you can run with a threshold like I do so you can hear when it is nulling too much and you have to slow the swing down of the coil. Being you are new I would run the sensitivity at auto which is max counter clockwise until it click as it will make the learning easier as you will have a smoother threshold tones. The disc and notch I too would run all the way counter clockwise as for beach hunting you will want to dig everything to get the gold. Even in reg land hunting I like to run no disc as it will still null on iron.
Go slow as this is where you get the depth with the Sovereign and make sure your signals are repeatable, one way signals are normally trash items you are catching the edge of them
It takes time and some patience as others will tell you to know this detector, but once you do you will see why many of us swear by a Sovereign.

Hi again Rick.
You have made so much sense . I really appreciate your help.
Most of my searching to start with will be on the beach. If i set it as you have described the only knob you did not mention was the threshold.
Do i set this so I always hear a slight noise or backet it a liitle anti clockwise to get to NO noise .
Just waiting now for the rain to stop which should be a few hours then its off treasure hunting I go.

A slight hum when you have the threshold toggle to threshold, not silent search. This way you will hear the threshold come and go so you know when you go over iron. If set right and you switch to silent search you will lose the threshold.

Good Luck
Rick

Thanks again. Went out to the beach for 2 hours to practice. It was raining but I had to put metre in bag. I think it still got a little drizzle on it but i wiped it off. Can this get wet from rain at all or is it important I keep it 100%dry. I only found 1 large bolt 6" long, about 12 inches deep and a australian $1 about 6 or so " down.
The only other thing i got was a sore arm muscle but that will get better , the more i use it.

Had fun, most important

also remember it comes and goes over iron, but also it may dissapear over a good target, the difference is when the threshold sound comes back, listen carefully ,if it comes back lower than when it was when it left then iron will be the culprit, if it comes back with the same tone as when it left it may in fact be a coin right on the edge of detection depth,if this is the case you can usually stop and wiggle up some kind of target response over these areas..........good luck.....just have fun man .........
