AT GOLD VDI or TONE ?

rtread

How often might we pass up a low vdi which in this case was a 43, because of fatigue or lazy or both ? I wanted to share this example as to why anyone including myself as to never do this. Most areas I hunt are extremely trashy with pull tabs of every kind to tons of shredded cans. This class ring hit on 43 and locked on, but the tone was so sweet and crystal clear with no warble or crackle all the way out to the edge of coil. Having said that, so does in a lot of cases small pieces of flat can slaw. For me if the tone remains clear at different angles, by all means dig. One of the nicest looking rings I have ever dug was a small gold band with a ruby stone that rang 43. You just never know. I know this ring was not silver or gold. It had slmt stamped inside, not sure what metal that is.My wife researched the ring and found its owner. When she gave it to the young man whom lost it she said the gold was in his smile. Listen to the tone, for it says alot. GOOD HUNTING TO ALL

Good point! Two weeks ago, I dug a 73 and out came an old dime covered with some oxidation at about 6 inches. If it sounds good, and it's deep, dig it!

Gold does not always have a smooth tone. Sometimes it is a bit rough and not pretty but I like the targets that have that extra umph to them. They just sound stronger, kinda jumps out at you. Nickles do it a little bit but gold is even more pronounced/stronger. That's the AT GOLD. I have tossed a gold ring out in my yard then search for it. You can learn something from it.

Also it is easier to hear the strong targets if you turn the sensitivity down a few bars. Otherwise everything sounds strong. Gold ring on the surface turn way down, like three bars.

Mikelab I totally agree with you on both points you made. I added a gold cross I found a couple of years back that has haunted me to this day.Not because its a cross but because I found it in ankle deep water at a fresh water lake that rang up back and fourth 37-38 vdi and a tone that was not at all desirable. The haunting part is I usually walk over targets like this. The cross was 10k and had very little weight. Thanks for your comments, good advise for everyone.
