AT PRO broke

Hello all AT users I have a question about the AT, I was hunting a day ago and just going along swigging my machine . Then all of a sudden the control box fell off the shaft, it separated right where the box screw go into the shaft. My question to you all is has ANYONE ever heard of this happening before ? I will call Garrett tomorrow but am disappointed that I am going to miss hunting time , and not sure of the expenses of it . The machine was 1 yr old last march . THANK YOU Dennis

Sorry to hear about your detector. I haven't had that particular problem, but have had to send my unit back for repair. Garrett will take care of you, but that doesn't make up for not having your detector. If you don't have a spare detector, work on researching your area while the detector is being sent back for repair and you will have new places to hunt when you get it back. Good luck.

Was it not wobbly prior to it falling off? If so, all you have to do is tighten the screws. Are the holes for the screws still there? Call Garrett and see what size you need for screws, and fix it yourself, so you are not without a detector. If you can't fix it, it is still under warranty, so that is great news. Call Garrett 1 800 527 4011 and ask for Sue, Hilda or Rusty. They will look after you. Garrett has excellent customer service!

Good luck!

Never had this issue, but in my "MAN" satchel I carry during my dig sessions, I have a mini screwdriver and a mini flashlight
For just the off chance my day goes south. Occasionally I hit those screws to make sure they are snug. Hope all goes well for you, garrett is a great company, so it should be OK!!!!

Thank you all for your input, I DO appreciate it , THANK YOU . I guess my fault I was not clear in my description . The screws were not loose, the round plastic tabs that the screws do into snapped off flush right at the shaft , with the screws still inside the box . I have hit the coil on rocks and roots , but not hard enough to do this to it . Just left me confused , then upset cause I was going to loose hunting time . I did call Garrett and they were GREAT. The machine is still under warranty . PHEW!!! thank you all .

I never thought of a mini flash light. But I do carry an extra set of batteries and a Leatherman multitool.

Waterdog and I went detecting one day and he wasn't finding much, All the sudden I seen his metal detector flying about 15ft next to me follow by "There's nothing here!". My point is that the Garrett AT Pro is very sturdy, it withstand Waterdog's throwing, They don't break easily. Call Garrett they are very helpful.

Hate to sound offensive here. But one would have to be pretty hard on the AT Pro to brake it like that. Has it been dropped, had something set on it or has it rolled around in the trunk of a car. Do you throw it down on it's side a lot when hunting?? Something had to cause that kind of breakage. The AT Pro is a reasonably tough detector and should not just break like that for no apparent reason.

You got no IDEA what you are talking about . I DID NOTHING to make this happen . I work to hard for my money to screw around like that , I TAKE CARE OF MY EQUIPMENT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, sorry don't be so touchy,, normally well made things like the AT Pro don't just brake like that for no reason. So the hard question had to be ask. But there is always a first time for everything. I also work hard for my money and take very good care of my detectors a lot of guys treat them like shovels. Again I am truly sorry for the offense send it to Garrett and get it fixed. Let folks know if there is a flaw people need to know about.

Take Care,
Bill G

Show some pic's of the damage or the broken areas of the control box..

Happy Hunting,
Bill G

There's another guy here whom owned the AT Gold which had a similar problem like yours, on his the 2 plastic that comes through the shaft's hole broke off. He called Garrett and they replace the lower case box for free. You'll be without your detector for about 2 weeks.

Ive read multiple stories of the control box breaking off. There is even atleast one video on youtube about how to put longer screws into it to prevent it from happening. From what I gather the screws are too short. Some people have replaced the screws with slightly longer ones to prevent this from happening. There is room for slightly longer screws but the provided ones only go in a short way.

I owe the original OP a Big Apology for what I ask him above about his issue with his AT Pro.

***** I stand here with mud on my face big time about what I ask the original OP and owe him a big apology. My AT Pro is now starting to do the same thing cracks at the mounting point but the housing has not broke off yet. My AT Pro is only 2 1/2 years old. It has been very well taken care and babied for lack of a better word.

This issue with the control box bolts may be a flaw in the AT Pro design. I am sending my AT Pro to Garrett this week. They quoted me $40.00 plus parts to fix it and the shipping cost to get it to them. I plan on talking things over and going over my concerns around this issue real good with Garrett when the tech calls me to go over things after they receive my detector. I want to know if this is a on going issue and what they plan to do about it. I have done a little research and this has happened to quite a few guys. I don't want a faulty detector that will break every year or so due to a design issue, if that's the case the AT Pro will go by by.

Guys, calm ...
All we care for our investment, but do not forget that it is a field tool and a delicate tool.
Like all things can be improved but in the meantime, we must be extremely careful.
I made a wooden drawer to carry drive MD equipment, properly installed and protected things ....
The second day of using the drawer, I found the support elbow, broken, :confused:inexplicably ... but I'm sure something I did wrong. I think it was not right into place .... :rage:
In my case I fixed it as I could ... the shipping of items multiplied by 2 the budget.
Several months that do not break the shield coil, does not use. Each protector cost me 20 euros, and not get performance.
greetings:cheers:

That's all fine and dandy. Garrett has an issue with the attachment Bolts being to short in my opinion they barley go into the control box nipples after seeing my broke. I like the original OP do not abuse and take very good are of my detectors that is why I apologized to the original OP for my remarks ( he was right there is an issue here and I have taken this issue up with Garrett ) I very much so understand they are a delicate electrical instrument. My detector is kept clean and stored in a padded bag inside it has not been thrown down or abused in the field or transported improperly .

Does this detector look abused to you????

Bill G, Exc me, It seems to me that your machine is better cared for many babies, but do not do me much attention, please, the translator can play us a trick. I do not intend to disturb.
