AT Pro vs MX Sport

New member
I'm a couple summers into detecting with a Garrett Ace 350. Going to upgrade to???? I have used a few times the AT Pro. Interested in the MX Sport because The features caught my attention. Getting more serious about the hobby. Looking for input from those more knowledgeable. Also ideas on pin pointers. Thanks Gregg

I would like to hear some thoughts too. I want to get in the water this year, and my natural reaction is to go with a Tiger Shark. But I'm trying to be open minded about this. That White's looks pretty good, and it's just a bit more expensive than the TS. And the ATPro has been splashing around for a few years now, and it's cheaper. So what about that MX Sport? Any thoughts?

For one, it has a true threshold based all-metal mode with VSat which can be turned into a static all-metal mode (and iron 'grunt'). 2nd, it has a mixed-mode relic mode with VSat in the all-metal channel. 3rd, it has true ground tracking which is also, AFAIK, the best in the industry. (also has a salt tracking mode, though I've never used it) 4th, it has variable target reject volume (which I utilize on mine and is useful in trashy areas). 5th, a threshold based coin/relic/all-metal mode with a user adjustable threshold. 6th, more tone options (up to 22, though I generally like :geek:. 7th, a volume control. 8th, VCO on/off . 9th, retains settings in ALL modes when turned off, not just custom mode as in the AT Pro. 10th, variable intensity backlight. 11th, a locking pinpoint mode. 12th, a faster target recovery speed. 13th, the ability to find considerably smaller targets (great for prospecting).
The AT Pro DOES allow for manual ground balancing, which the MX Pro doesn't, and has a bit more resolution in the iron range. The standard mode can be considered a non-VCO mode, but it also has a slower recovery speed. The MXS recovery speed isn't affected by VCO on/off.

I've got both as well, AT pro I will use this summer for fresh drops with a big coil , I do think the tones are more solid and clear and ID is on target more , right now I am useing the MX sport , only to learn it better before summer, its way more sensitive on small stuff especially on low aluminum conductives same as gold, its also deeper than the AT pro , hot rocks, bottle caps , you will be digging more, but recently I've been recognizing bottle caps a little easier I do know the sport will let me know if their is a class ring over a foot deep, because of just finding small earings and bobby pins very deep, I'm glad I have both but I would pick the MX sport if I had to choose one because of depth , sensitivity, and prospecting mode it's a beast ,

The ground tracking on the MXS makes for a HUGE difference when detecting over heavily mineralized and variable ground.. like where I hunt. Sometimes there are literally streaks of black sand (magnetite) on the surface which cause big problems with detectors that can't track, and even those. One thing I'd like to see sold for it is a small epoxy filled concentric coil, not the chunky 6" bullseye.

Still too heavy. Which is a shame as my first real machine was an MXT Pro. I LOVED it but due to age and tennis elbow, it got to the point I couldn't swing it for more than an hour. White's is really getting behind on the trend towards lighter machines. I don't understand why they're not stepping up.

The Eagle 11sl was my first detector, then I went with the New At The Time, MXT. I still have that MXT and it still works as good as it did when it came out of the box new. I sold my old 89 Eagle 11sl , but missed it so bad I got a nice 90 sl to replace it. Don't use the Eagle as much as the MXT and have a new MXT just waiting to see if my old one dose quit. I have 7 detectors some of the Top Ones but still grab the MXT the most. It dose get me tired, I got a swing thing to help and it works also. I just can't give up my MXT. I have one of the best from over the big pond, but still like the MXT.
