Andy,
I read your fine article in the May 2005 Lost Treasure magazine on Survival of the hobby.I also kept in mind a lot of the posts that are sent into these forums. There is so much information sent in,and I am not in any way critisizing you.I would like to suggest that as a person in your position as a writer of a national magazine of the hobby.Collect this information and work together with the manufactures to create a database of laws and rules set up by all the states in the country.Maybe even make a special forum here.If it cost anything,I'm sure the manufactures would sponsor it.This way a hobbist, detectorist, etc can just tap into it and know what's going on.Laws are made by elected legislators and most times when you have rules put down against metal detecting it is by an appointee of a Governor, and passes down the chain in the false sense that it is a law.You also brought out about correcting or notifying authorities of some one if they leave a mess while detecting. The places where I get permission slips for have guidlines to follow. These have very good what I call house keeping rules. You don't tend to them they take your permission slip back,I don't recommend correcting any one if you are alone and in a public place. The way this country is going you have to worry about your life.ONE THING I WOULD SUGGEST IS,CARRY A CELL PHONE ON THE OUT SIDE OF YOUR CLOTHES,EVEN IF IT"S NO GOOD.If hoodlums or thieves approuch you in the urban areas,it could stop them cold,Also if you have a local police hat (baseball type)wear it,it is a good stopper. If any one else reads this post please feel free to send your information to Andy,if Andy would allow it .If not Then put it as a new post and we will get it for our own records.Never fear to contact your legislatures about these matters. That's why they got elected.I'm going to cut this off here Andy and hope maybe you, your company ,the magazine and the administrator of this forum take the ball and run with. You could have another good artical to write about when it rolls in.
Remember there are more coins in the ground lost ,than there are in ciculation.
The history that we learn is due to the millions of treasure hunters who donate their findings. Don't forget we notify the scholars. They in turn interpet and teach.Very few dig.
GOOD HUNTING
