Audio adjustments with headphones

This just crossed my mind and wonder if anyone has done any research on this. I know you tune the receiver of a PI unit so that the background is just audible. However, is it best to do this with the headset volume set full up or would it be better to turn the receiver full up and lower the headset volume so that the background is just audible. I am sure there would be a difference in depth but which way would be better?

I had not looked at any scematics and because the "volume" control is called the "threshold" I made the assumption that threshold was setting gain of the input sections instead of the output audio. As I have just seen from Geotech, I made the wrong assumption.

One would be best to set the threshold level with the volume set at max. on the headphones.
Yes, with your PI unit it can be used to adjust the depth of targets. Being set at just audible, sets the detector at is optimum point, and you will notice slight changes in the threshold from deep targets. Setting the threshold silent, takes a stronger signal before you notice it. By using the threshold adjustment like this, one can control the depth a bit.
