Auto vs manual sensitivity

I have used my Safari for a few weeks now and found good silver. I used it on the Auto Sen. and it was stable. I started playing with the manual sen. and the machine started talking alot. When I got a good coin signal on auto mode , I adjusted the sen. manually and ran the coil over the coin. The tone was louder which worries me because the tone on auto was quiet at about 4". I am I missing deeper targets on Auto mode? Over the same coin I changed the sen. to 10 before the machine responded like it was on auto. mode. Setting 20, forget about it! At about setting 14 the safari made less noise but I wasn't sure if the extra sounds were false. Anyhow, what are your experiences with man. vs auto mode?

On both the Sovereign and the Safari, (explorer too) manual sens has always appeared to give the best performance, meaning more target sensitivity and depth,

Manual sens, also from my own experience, can be more stable than Auto mode.

While not the best way to run your sens, Auto mode is convenient and does a decent job

jspeedy and Tony thanks for the post. I have been running auto on the beach and it has been very stable. There was one day that I had to take it off auto and run about 15? or so to get it stable just on a section of wet black sand. That was when I first got it and wasn't sure I had the settings right. In auto I am digging deep targets. Gads don't tell me I can even go deeper. Oh my aching arms....:detecting:...Z

Auto is a means of out of the box stability for just about everywhere.. Try setting 16 17 and see if you do not go deeper..

Oh, El don't fill my head with more goofy thoughts than I already have. If I take it off auto I can even get deeper. I was monkeying around in some trash this morning and I kept getting a 15 with - and + readings in this trash filled area. So I dug the dog gone thing. Well the hole was about the size of a 155 howitzer hole, maybe just a little smaller. Do you I got a 1948 nickle out of there.
I got my new coil today and will be running a 4.5"X7" coil in the trash areas now. I have high hopes that this coil will really help me in the trashy areas I would like to get at with the Safari.
Thanks for reading ....Z

That is one of my few complaints about the Safari...

I wish there was someway to determine what setting the machine chooses in Auto mode. Example, digging in mineralized soil does the machine set itself at 10 or 18? If you knew what the Auto mode determined to be the best setting you could bump it a point at a time to see how far you get without chatter.

When I first got my safari I ran auto sensitivity and the machine never shut up, it was pretty unstable. I set mine manually at around 14 or 15. Anything higher for me tends to lead to a lot of falsing. It'd be nice to run it at 20 for the depth but the machine is just too erratic with sens that high.

Tested auto vs man. Manual sens. in 18 goes 12cm. deeper but singing a lot. If you find something good you hear it just a lot of noise on manual. But deeper is better right.

Hello Marxionu, Mine is set at 15 and I have dug coinsized targets at 12 inches (28cm), and larger targets at 14-16 inches (38.4 cm), and yes.... the deeper = older :)

OK, Im new to this game and I have a safari and I hunt in a illinois park that dates back to about 1890 and over the years a lot of junk . ive been there about 8 times and Ive got two barber dimes and two rosies also about 10 wheaties and i'm very happy but I'm having some trouble with falsing and a lot of chatter. What would you guys suggest? Need help. Vince

Try manual sens. 10-15. If the coin is there you hear it. But auto sens and thrash density to high on coin mode is very stable. Dig only repeatable from every angle signals, Safari is singing you must hear the right signal from that song.

I agree with Marx, man sens at about 14 works for me. Dig only the clear repeaters, the safari is a very sensitive machine and can easily pick up very small fragments of metal/minerals in the soil, this is why it chats so much. and if your a coinshooter dig signals between 32 and and 39 (pennies to quarters), and only 14 for nickels. You may miss a few but you'll dig a lot less holes. I wont dig targets where the #'s are all over the map, such as a target giving back #'s like 32, 25,12, 29.... thats usually crap. but if you get #'s all over the map like 34, 37,33, 14.... dig that, its most likely a coin spill.

hiya guys,,i have a sovereign g.t. and the auto sens. is deep but manual is nearly twice as deep,,try them both at home in air,,see for yourselves,,rgds ,,comcat:ukflag:

thanks a lot !!! looks like i'll try running at 10-15 I tried 17 and it helped a little today but still had a lot of chatter. Hoping to go tomarrow. I'll let you know how it goes. thanks again Vince.

Well with the 4.5X7" coil I am running sensitivity at 7-15 in the trashy areas and it does run pretty stable. When I run auto it hangs on to a signal the whole swing. You have to go slow and with signals inches apart it sometimes gets confused if you go too fast. I have gotten 6 wheats and 1 nickle from the 40's in these trash areas only about 4 inches down.
Thanks for reading....Z

hey Z, I was at the old high school in the town I live in and there is a lot of trash, you know bottle caps pull tabs and the like. Have you used the safari 11 inch DD coil because thats what I use cause its the only coil I have. Im asking because your comment was about using a small coil and i'm wondering if it would help me. I did lower my sensitivity to 12 and that did help some. Vince
