A .380 is basically a 9mm short.....better than nothing, but will probably just piss someone off if you shot them with it. I would prefer a revolver for protection because you eliminate the possibility of a jam with a revolver. Take a look at the Ruger SP101 in .327 caliber.
It is as potent as the .357 magnum but has much less recoil and report.
