battery power for deepstar

Hi Folks,
Would any of you guys know if the Deepstar will work on a power supply of 12v.
My query is, as the Deepstar has a high power consumption, ie. approx 5hrs on normal batt. pak of 2.2amp - could you use a small 12v sealed lead acid battery say approx 8 - 10amp. This could be used through the extra ( rewired ) coil connection socket and hip mounted. I would guess that the unit would not go fully into the green, but should stay there far longer, before going into the red area; therefore giving a far longer detecting time. Thats if will work on a supply of 12V.
Any ideas?

Hi DS,
The problem is that there is an internal 12V regulator and using a 12V supply means that the regulator has got nothing to work with. Normally you have to have a couple of volts of overhead. The transmitter output stage uses the raw battery voltage, so the output current will be a bit lower on 12V. You will likely find that the Deepstar will run on 12V, but be less stable.
The best option is to send it to me for the Hi/Lo power modification. This halves the TX pulse width to give double the battery life in the Lo position. Detection range is still 80-85% on most objects.
