Battery strength

I'm finding that my batteries are not reducing in capacity evenly. I use 8 x AA alkalines, and always use the top brand Energisers (Titanium e2 series). I find that after some use, that one bank of 4 batteries are near full strength, whilst the other bank of 4 batteries are about half depleted. This is the second batch of 8 that have done this, with use by dates 2010. All batteries were checked to be at full strength initially.
The battery holder appears to be normal.
I am gauging these tests by the little green dots that illuminate when the battery is squeezed together on the built in tester. Does anyone know if these built in charge testers are accurate. I had a Radio Shack battery tester, but found this to be useless, even though it stated that tests were under load.
Any ideas would be appreciated. ???

I wouldn't trust the green dots to far. I think the best way is to get a cheap Multi-Meter and use it. If you have a harbor freight nearby they have several starting at $4.00. I like the digital ones best.

As all the batteries are in series, there is no way that one bank of four could run down before the other. Which side is the bank that appears to have run down? Is it facing the light, or in the dark at the back. Just a wild shot, but I wonder if the dots are affected by light. No substitute for a decent meter <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">

The battery case terminals are shorting ever so slightly on the aluminum plate inside. Put some electrical tape on the alu. plate to protect the terminals from making contact. This happens when you close the lid. The foam inside compresses and allows miss aligned battery terminals to touch the alu. plate.
I actually fried a battery case before I found the reason.

Your light theory seems to be the cause of the mystery !!
I reversed the batteries, and sure enough, the other bank of 4 (now exposed to the light), are giving a stronger signal. The sunlight appears to be warming the batteries "upside".
All batteries read the same after being left for 5 or 10 minutes at room temperature. Even the warmth from the hand will accelerate battery readings.
