Beach Sand Scoops

Is it me or is the cost of long handle Stainless Steel beach sand scoops going threw the roof.
I want to get one but it would be next to impossible to talk my wife into letting me get one of those $150 to $160.
I had an galvanized one and I destroyed it in some stones and gravel.
Is there any places out there that still has them at a more reasonable prices.

Hay Tomb, sorry for the late reply But thanks for the reply but I don't think the one you showed me would be strong enough because some beaches in my area have some golf-ball size rocks in them.
I will be heading down to Florida in the near future and I think I will stop into Riley's down there and get one that is made out of 14gauge stainless steel because I don't think the wire mesh would hold up. I know it is going to be expensive but I think it will hold up a lot better.

Thanks everyone.
I found these and I will be near their store in the future and I'll probably get one then. I have purchased from them before years ago and the were really nice and helpful. They have a really good selection of stainless and aluminum scoops.

Hears an update.
After spending countless hours on looking at I think every scoop out there. I finely decided on one.
I know it is pricey but this thing is built like a rock. It has 1/4 inch holes so the sand can get out Quickly and are small enough that ear rings and neck chains shouldn't go threw. At 3 1/2 lbs it will be easy to carry and use. It also has a strongly built spot for your foot to use to push on.
Dry sand will just fall threw and with wet sand just brushing the inside the sand will still fall threw. After comparing it with the ones with the 1/2 in round holes spaced so far apart and ones with week screens on then this one is much better. It will last the rest of my life.
I was told by Tim the dealer below that they actually drove a truck up on this scoop with no damage. I have met the person that make these Scoop's here in Michigan.

I had a chance to put this scoop threw good test on Florida beaches over the holidays and am very happy with it and it is lighter than most that I have seen and it will be the last one that I will have to ever buy.

I actually changed it a little by unbolting the handle bracket and mounting it on top on an angle (no drilling needed, and you just need two more bolts and two pieces of aluminum) and I think it makes it even better because you don,t have to place the handle so far forward and you don"t have to raise your foot so high. This scoop only weighs 3 1/2 lbs plus the handle. It is very comfortable to carry and strong.

I am looking forward to using it up here on Lake Michigan beaches after having a good trial run on the Florida beaches.
One thing I really liked is that when you go to clean it out to see whats inside you can just shake it back in forth or just rub your hand inside ans the wet or dry sand just falls threw all the 1/4" holes. I really like this scoop. and it is ether a beach or water scoop and the handle dose float a little. I carry it with the handle pointing forward so it doesn't interfere with my detector and just swing it down and forward to dig and at one time I actually used it like a shovel.

Hi Doug (Donut),

I'm thinking about getting the same scoop and like the way you modified the handle. Can you explain a little bit more what is involved in the modification? Specifically, where do the 2 pieces of aluminum fit in?

Thanks,

Steve

you just unbolt the handle mount from the back and just place it on the top and align the holes up so it is on the same angle as the top flap on the front and you will have to buy two more nuts and bolts and also two bolts to go threw the handle. The holes are already there on the top flap so all you need is a piece of 1/8 x 2" piece of aluminum from Lowe's. The two pieces of Aluminum are needed for extra strength. Remember this scoop only weighs 3 1/2 lbs without handle. But it is extremely strong and easy to carry. (by strong I don't' mean you use it to move a 200lb bolder)
I really like mine and has a good chance to use it on some Florida beaches over the holidays and of all the scoops I have used it is by far the best one. Here is another view of how I mounted it. Only the holes in the aluminum needs to be drilled. It is easy to do.
Hope this helps.

Hi Doug,

Based on your picture, it appears that the aluminum is placed inside the scoop against the back wall and then bolted to the scoop handle mount. Question is, do you need 2 pieces of 1/8 x 2" aluminum for this or just 1? If two, are they laid side by side or 1 on top of the other? Sorry, to ask so many questions, but want to make sure that I do it right.

Thanks,

Steve

Steve if you look at the previous pictures there is a flange that stickup angled back (look at the left hand bolt in the top corner of the last picture) on the top of the basket and when you place the handle bracket on top it just happens to be on the same angle. There needs to be two brackets, one on each side to give it strength and so the bolts going down threw the bracket do not carry the load and bend the basket on top.

Doug,

Thanks, I understand the mounting for the top of the scoop. One last question.... It looks like you also put a piece of medal inside the scoop and bolted through it to support the bottom of the basket. Am I just seeing things??

Thanks,

Steve

Nope I did not add any other metal inside, it already has the square holes inside. Just unbolt it from the back and just raise it up and forward to the point the front angle line up and install the two bolts inside the mount down into the top of the basket and out the two aluminum brackets on the front on each side. It's easy.

Those are nice scoops however with only a 5" opening that is not much room and being made out of Aluminum it is lighter however the the handle is going to end up bending if you get into any hard sand ( I know because I had one similar to it). That is why I went to the Stainless Steel for extra strength and with all the 1/4 " holes it cleans out easily even with wet sand because you can rub your hand back in forth inside it and I can use it i light gravel in small streems if I an careful. It is a very strong Scoop.
