Took the Sov out today with a new Nel Tornado coil.Very impressive performance to say the least, well balanced, easy to pinpoint with and awesome depth.Found this ring......unfortunately its a gold plated tungsten junker, still its the first ring i've found for a while so i'm enthusiastic about the beaches again.

Unfortunately that's the new, norm with the price of gold so high. They Chinese have perfected a gold plating process called 'ion' plating. Looks just like the real thing and
it doesnt tarnish or corroded. Why spend hundreds on the real thing when you can buy a good repro for $25 !!!

Back in the good old days, 20+ years ago, I use to find close to 50 gold rings a year. Now, Im down to less that 5. Its tough to find the real thing. Even silver rings are hard to find
with all the stainless and tungsten.

Ya need a really big cut or some very old dirt to find the real gold. Good luck. Takes time & patience !!!

I know what you mean Donna, rings used to come easy at one time but now its really hard work to find them.2014 was my best year when a storm ripped tons of sand from our local beach......we had loads off that year.Even coins are difficult to find these days as people carry less cash around.

This is what i'm currently using for the beach Odans........the GT with the new Nel Tornado is like a PI with discrim......but don't forget i did have a depth mod done on it which gives it a couple of inches more over the normal factory set up machine.
The xterra pro i bought for when its lashing down with rain when i don't want to risk taking the GT out......i put the 15x12 equinox coil on it so it would be getting close to the depths of the GT.

Seems great minds think alike Nauti, lol. My Sov Elite has a depth mod that the previous owner had installed, and I run it with 12x10 & 15x12 SEF Butterfly coils, very similar looking to your Tornado. Get ready to dig deep with that Tornado, my 12x10 SE#F has had me digging 1/2 way to China many times.

Earlier this year, I picked up an X-Terra Elite so I'd have a backup detector, and one that I could swing on the beach if/when it started raining. Most recently, I picked up a White's Dual Field PI that was previously owned and modded by Joe Beechnut/OBN.

The GT........bought it used a while back in near mint condition, getting so hard to get any of the models over here now.

A couple of the SEF coils have just come up in a shop over here......i'm seriously tempted to get one just so i have another coil for the Sov.......a mate of mine had one on his explorer and he loved it.I find myself trying to buy as many spares as i can to future proof the Sov......just don't want to give it up.
Which sef would you recommend, the 15 or 12 inch......i have the opportunity to by either.👍

Personally, I would go with the 12x10 SEF. I hardly ever use the 15x12, as I have to turn sensitivity down on the wet and shallow water, while I can crank sensitivity a bit with my 12x10. The 12x10 is the best all-around SEF IMHO and has had me digging 1/2 way to China on many occasions. One time, I got a deep target and the hole I dug was so big that I stepped down into the hole. The top of the sand was equal to the top of my kneecap, which when I measured, was 24", so the 12x10 SEF will give your arm plenty of joint pain, lol. It's lighter than the 15x12, provides great coverage, easier to swing in water, and will go deeper than you really feel like digging. It's been on my Sov for over 10 years.
