After my last hunt, I decided to dig through my files in search of my most dinged up find that I am least proud of. I always try to dig coins carefully but accidents do happen from time to time. Seeing how most of us are not hunting much lately due to this heat wave, my challenge to you is this: For those who are less than perfect from time to time, please post the nicest coin you have ever mangled while digging. To keep this relevant to the forum, explorer finds only please. My records indicate that on April 10, 2011, I brutalized this poor defenseless barber. Show me some of yours so we can all cringe together at our imperfections. Have fun, JJ

Beat the heat challenge

and although it wasn't a long scratch...I gouged it nice and deep on the back at the bottom between "half" and "dollar"...in fact almost clean through to the front.
Trust me the scanned pic didn't do my handy work justice. I got her nice and deep

As for the heat...that isn't what's keeping me from hunting. It's the absolute damage done to the turf regardless of how a plug is cut in this bone dry ground
No way I'm gonna dig and damage in this dry time.

That one will be hard to top, I hurt for you! Good call on the turf tip as well. "Beat the drought" would have been a more appropriate title.

Due to my superior pinpointing skills 
I have only managed to gouge one silver coin in the three years since I got back in the hobby. Not my nicest silver find by any stretch, but you never forget the ones you scratch. And no, that is'nt LIBERTY you see on the head, it's LESCHE ..

Lesche remains undefeated vs. Barbers. You are right about one thing: You never forget the ones you scratch. I vividly remember cleaning up myself for lunch and my barber in a gas station bathroom after the hunt. I was excited to read the date when a quick rinse in the sink turned a great day of hunting into one I didn't want to talk about....ever again. We quickly learn from our mistakes.

Here is one from my post just this month July 1st.
I had a hard time digging especially in this certain area so, I wreaked havoc on this Barber on the left with the Lesche.

I do not want to think how many I could possibly have done this too in 30+ years.
but, its found rather then still lost. 
I believe it is worth digging small plugs and take that chance of marring one rather then dig monstrous holes giving people the impression you are getting ready to plant a small shrub.

My second best coin find ever - 1909 S VDB wheatie in awesome condition except for the gouge I put in it 
Ironically, I found about 35 wheaties with this one that day and wouldn't you know it, this is the only one that got dinged.... I'm still thrilled to death with finding it though!!! I have gouged up more nice coins than I care to admit, but this was my worst "OOPS!" Take care and HH, MIke.

Dang Mike. That one almost made me tear up! Great find nonetheless.
That reminds me of my most brutalized coin find. Though it was only a newer common date lincoln cent, my method of hacking through inches of ice and frozen ground were that of crazed madman determined to get some hunting in. Poor Mr. Lincoln was obliterated!
