Discovered these techniques in the good old Army days while in the field for weeks-- Wear a flea collar around each boot!!! For extra protection, always wear long pants and put the collars on the outside of the pants around the ankles. Don't wear in contact with skin as it will cause severe irritation.
If walking through high grass, spray your pants and shirt with a good smelling fly spray. It really stays on and kills anything almost on contact before it gets to home base. Taking a couple of Garlic tablets keeps flying mosquitoes away from your face and neck. They smell it coming out of your pores but is not offensive to others unless eaten raw which really works well.
I never use anything on my skin to limit life time exposure of these nerve agents and never got ate up with anything using these methods.

I stay away from the most obvious tick habitat and have still managed to get three of on me this year <img src="/metal/html/frown.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":(">
