better for price: ace 250 or explorer?

I want to know which one is better: explorer or ace 250? you're probably going to say minelab, so I'm also going to post it on garrett and see what reasons are better. Its what detector is better for its price, not overall. post your reasons!

You guys are hilarious over here. I wanted to see, as a Garrett user, what your reply would be. I said that using an Explorer where an Ace would excel would be like using a .357 mag on a sparrow.

Taking a 'forum' poll doesn't sound like a very wise method to use in selecting your equipment.

Please remember to fill in your holes and obtain permission before you hunt private property.

garrrett is best if you look price, but if you want to learn more about this hobby you try other models and compare, I did my comparison, for most situation explorer is very nice or one of the best, its still has allot minuses but less then most other detectors. but I wish you good luck in using ace250. I hope to convence you that you need that Garrett. The less people i have out here with an Explorer the better. While you are asking those OTHER folk ask them how many of them got over 100 pieces of silver this year. Ive got my hand up. I wont knock the 250 its a good coin and and jewelry manchine in trashy parks. But an overall machine its not. OK OK you made me say it the Explorer may be just a little better than the 250. But the DOWN SIDE is the learning curve, the longer time it takes to recover a coin because of depth, which cost you more for better digging tools, you get more silver than you can sell, you get wet from the beach spray on the wet sand, you have to carry this larger pro coil around, and last but not least...... you arent going to get a used Explorer for the price of a new 250 that works. But all said and done if i were you id listen to the OTHER folk and get that ACE.

You said better for price. To me it is no contest. I would not use the 250 over the explorer if it was given to me for free. Not knocking garret, for its price the ace is a good deal.....;o) I think it all depends on what you want from a detector also. If you are just a casual hunter who goes out to a park or school every once in a while looking for clad then get the ace. If you are more serious and are interested in finding deeper coins with accurate target id then go for the explorer. The target ID of the ace (the one I had) gets jumpy real quick past 3-4 inches in my ground. The explorer will handle bad ground better and has a lot more features but then again thats why it is more expensive. What was that saying? Value is in the eye of the beholder...or something like that:)

:usaflag:I found a '43 Walker Half, a '52 Franklin Half, a 1917 and 1928 SLQ, and countless mercs and rosies and war nickels with my Ace 250. So the radio shack comment was'nt necessary. Some people, with mouths to feed, don't have $1200 to pi$$ away on a toy. I found enough clad with my Ace to pay 3/4 of the cost for my SE.

The Ace is an excellent detector for the price. But the SE is a "silver sucker" and worth every penny that it costs. Much bigger learning curve but it will reward you if you stick to it.

Some of the parks I hunt are in the hood so I would rather lose a $300.00 Garrett to thugs than my life over a $3000.00 Minelab

Sorry if I hurt any feelings with the R/S comment....I do have mouths to feed even tho mine's the biggest...I bought my Exp used for $600 and it came with a dx-1. My DFX cost a grand, but it sits in the closet collecting dust, I might put it up against an Ace 250.

:usaflag:No feelings hurt. I think it's almost impossible to compare the two. Different price levels..different performance levels...completely.

Nice posts, McDave. My Ace meets my hobbyist need in the areas I hunt. Now when I win the lottery, I'm gonna get one of those. I've wanted one for years and would be in md heaven just learning all the features. My wife would have to send a PI out to find me and bring me back home.

I have a Garrett GTI 2500 and a Explorer II and I agree with most of the above comments. The GTI 2500 is several steps above the Ace 250 on the Garrett line. I metal Detected a yard with the GTI last year and thought I searched it pretty well by griding and found a lot of coins with a few Wheat cents. I took the Explorer to the same yard this year and was thinking was not going to find much: was I suprised. I found 2 Indian head pennies and a silver dime along with many more wheats in a place where I thought the Garrett did a good job.

My reason for this; now this is just my reasoning, I think the FBS technology sending down the multiple frequencies covers more ground and misses LESS coins in the same sweep method.

I realize the Garrett is good when electric lines are nearby as the Explorer will jump a lot.

So my feeling if one can afford a Minelab it is just a better coin finder than a Garrett. Each does its purpose in finding coins down to 5 inches; but if want to find the older coins and more silver then spend the extra money and get the Minelab; it will not dissappoint.

You folks need to hunt more and answer posts like this less. It's a set up, albeit a weak one, for an argument from a guy who has 18 total posts - and some of those are asking where to hunt. Pssshhh what could he possibly know about either detector... ?
