BH Quick Draw 2

Good Afternoon,

A newbie here and a newbie to MD. I recently purchased a BH Qucik Draw 2. Looking forward to get started detecting. Does really cold weather interfere with the metal detectors. Should I be concerned about temperature while deletecing?
Thank you in advance.

It shouldn't be a problem with the cold. I've never hunted below 20 degrees. Make sure the the ground's not frozen. I live here in Kentucky and I'm going tomorrow. It's 32 so they say. subzero lately. You need to really dress in layers. I had an SS2 by bounty hunter. Wear gloves etc. it can get cumbersome. There's a guy that hunts in Canada all the time. I'll be out with my whites M6 tomorrow. Good luck. Happy Hunting.

Thanks for the info. Will go out tomorrow and give it try. I live in Georgia and it suppose to be about 32 for the high. Wonder what I will find...

Tomorrow the back yard should make for some good practice. Are public parks ok places to go to for detecting? Since I am new to this, any suggestions on where to go and places not to go? I know private property without the owners' permission is off limits.

Technically you need a permit to metal detect parks here in the state of Maryland. Generally though you can do it without much problem just as long you leave the ground as you found it. Learn to dig a good hole without tearing it up. Pinpointers help in that respect. Still though if you go to a park that has an office check first before going in because the fine can be pretty hefty. Try hunting ballfields and playgrounds first you will find things quicker and not get discouraged.

Really cold weather can shorten your battery life. I carry a digital camera(Nikon D80) with me at all times. Recently, the temps here have been around -20F in the mornings. I always keep my spare camera battery in my insede coat pocket so they stay warm and ready in case I need them. I am sure the same trick works with detectors too.

Not only the batteries, but the LCD displays are effected by the cold...It can make your LCD go blank (heat will make it turn all black)...
I generally do not hunt if the temps are below 30F

HH,

Thank you all for the info and suggestions. I went out yesterday with all metal setting on my QD2. I wanted See if it would work and find anything. I was very surprised. I got a signal on iron at 6 inches deep. So I dug the spot, able to pin point using info I got here(especially the videos by gogopher) and found a small piece of metal, not sure what it is but the detector found it. I removed the small piece of metal and went over the area again and no signal. It may be just a scrap piece of metal but to find that small of a piece (used a pin pointer that came with the detector) was exciting. I know without a doubt that I have a good detector. May be small but to find it and think; now where did it come from and when and what was it, makes it exciting to me.

Very Glad my videos helped out, and glad your confident with your detector...The QD2 is a capable machine...I had found a bunch of BBs one day that someone spilled out in the woods...I was surprised it picked up something that small....This was with a Pioneer 505, which is similar to a Sharp Shooter II...

HH,

Yea ! today I found my first dime and penny . not old not special but their Mine I found them at park , at least I'm learning to use this thing ( i look at your vedios at least 1 a day. Thanks

I have never been bothered at schools (go when school is out though)...I have even had the grounds keepers come up and want to know about my detector and try it out...They see that I do not tear up the fields, and they are OK with me being there...
