Big coil on a Goldquest

Hi.
I would like to know if it is possible to build a 30"x30" inches coil for the Goldquest or the Beachscan ?
The aim is to search for big items, as a helmet underground, without the sensitivity to tiny objects.

Hi Daniele,

You could build a larger coil and get it to work, but there is a point when you won't see any more depth advantage. The GQ or the Beachscan are low powered PI's so there is less coil energy. On the plus side, a larger coil will do as you say and ignore some of the smaller stuff.

If you want to reduce finding some of the smaller stuff, you can turn the delay back also. This has some advantage on these detectors because more delay also means more pulse time, which can help with increasing depth on certain objects.

I suspect the only way one would know if such a coil would meet their purposes would be to build one and see. On the plus side, it is reasonably easy to get a home made coil to work on either of these two detectors.

Good luck and have fun if you decide to try.

When you heading back out here to Az. I think I heard ROd say this weekend.....? Am I correct?
I would love to come back out and meet up. Things are a bit better this year...and even better this week. We thought our shop was being closed but turns out soemone had the wrong 411...it was a diiferent plant.
So I can keep my Goldquest and may pick up a TDI even...and I finally have a 4x4 even

Hi Scott,

Sorry I didn't answer this earlier, but I didn't have much of an internet connection while I was in AZ. In fact, I couldn't get my emails, and had to sit outside to even connect. When I did connect, it was poor at best. That became a real problem at night, so I simply gave up before seeing your post.

Anyway, I am back in Colorado now.

Good to hear things are going better for you. If you pick up a TDI, I think you will like it. It is well balanced and works well. The single tone feature just add a new dimension to the original design, thus making it quite useful for coin hunting also.

Keep me posted if you get a TDI. As always, I have a few ideas for it.
