Big Silver and Mercs With All Metal

I hunted an abandoned church today that I first hunted in 1984. The detectors I've used here in the past were a Garrett Groundhog in the 80's and Fisher 1266X in the 90's. Today I took the F75 there to see what targets I may have missed years ago with the older detectors. The site was not overly trashy so I hunted in Motion All Metal with Sensitivity set at 87. After hunting a while without getting any solid 70 readings ,I started zeroing in on readings that were on the lower side of the 50's up to mid 60's. When coming across these targets I kept swinging over them looking for variation in the numbers. Sometimes a mid to high 50 number would hit in the high 60's on about 1 out of 5 scans over the target. A couple of times they would even show a low 70's number then go back down to the 50-60 range. I dug all of these type targets and most of them were coins in the 7-8 inch range. The Wheat Cents were all older ones from the teens to mid 1930's. The two Indian Heads gave the same readings as these older Wheats. The Mercs also had lower than normal numbers in the mid 60's range and I suspect they were tilted or on edge. The Walking Liberty Half didn't give a true reading as well. It was about 9 inches down under a layer of grown over gravel. It was a bouncy hit that wanted to stay in the low 70's but it did hit 92 on a couple of the swings over it. NONE of these coins gave "loud" signals with high confidence. The "soft" hits with jumpy numbers is what I concentrated on today.These were not "whisper" sounds but I had to listen carefully and ignore the louder signals....Thanks for looking

Thanks jim tn...No I didn't check any of the targets in Disc,but I see what you are getting at. I need to do this in the future. Along these lines,I did experiment with Sensitivity on several of the targets. I tried turning Sensitivity up to the high 90's over the targets before digging. When I did this it DIDN'T change the numbers but it caused the "volume" of the signal to go down a small amount. This decrease in volume was enough that I possibly would have passed over the target. I think this shows that INCREASED Sensitivity can allow the detector to be affected by ground minerals in a negative way. The Fast Grab ground balance reading was between 72 and 74 in this area.

I noticed you were running sen. of 87. I also run 85-87 as higher seems to make the 75 a bit more sparky and one can miss those whisper tic's. But, I run in the disc. mode with 0 disc. almost all the time. HH jim tn

Which coil were you using?

Great job getting those coins btw. Congrats. Nice haul.
I've done well going over previously done sites with a better machin. It's very grattifying and helps ease the burden of spending the money on the upgrade.

Thanks Trailduster.... I was using the stock 11" DD coil. Glad you are doing well on the previously hunted sites.

it will amaze you--no recovery delay either (you can hold the unit still over a target) and easier to hear multiple targets in proximity.
