Well I went into the day at 97 silver coins for the year and was hopeful that I would break 100. It turned out to be my best day of the year with 9 total silver: 4 Rosies (1946, 1947 1951, 1952), 4 Mercs (1923, 1943(#100), 1945 and 1945-D) and my first ever Barber Quarter, 1903-O. Incredible details on the Barber as the LIBERTY is fully legible. It came out of the ground black. 8 of the 9 were found at an old school that I have hunted many times before, but this time I tried an area quite distant from the main school with great success.

Totals for the year:

1 War Nickel
2 Barber Halves
2 Walking Liberty Halves
1 Barber Quarter
5 Standing Liberty Quarters
14 Washington Quarters
15 Barber Dimes
19 Roosevelt Dimes
47 Mercury Dimes

Looking forward to taking a bit of a break now that 100 has been hit.

Congrats!!! Very impressive for the first half of the year!
Looking forward to seeing more.

That is fantastic! I don't know how you do it. I have about 15 silvers for the year. You are leaving us all in the dust. What part of the country are you in? I am seriously running out of places to go. Can you tell the difference between a clad dime or quarter and a silver one? They sound the same to me. Keep up the good work.

I live in Massachusetts so I have lots of old places to hunt. This year all of the silver has come from 6 different places. Now that I have hit 100 I am going to try some new places. Yes I can generally tell the difference between a clad and silver quarter or dime by the sound they make. Clad tends to give a "tinny" sound whereas silver is more high tone and tends to "warble" a bit when you pass over it. Having said that there are times when I guess whether it is silver or clad based on the sound and get it wrong, so you just never know. I've learned you can't always go by the TID, as I have found silver with 36 readings. The sound is the key. I am going to try the two-tone mode I have read about on posts. The other point I would make is that you can't always go by the depth of the coin. I have found barber dimes that are 1 inch under ground and memorial pennies that are 7-8 inches. Good luck with your hunting.

Thanks for the tips... that is nice of you. I know that the halves can come in real low number like 34-36 Same with silver dollars. If I hear a high 34 -39 I dig it. I believe I had a liberty seated dime come in the upper 20's. We are neighbors...I was raised in Mass and now live in upstate Ny not too far away.. Many of the old schools are gone and the new schools have crazy turf and finding the old parks is difficult as it is very rural up here. If you ever want to get together let me know. Mass is a great place to hunt...more activity BUT we have 2 wars here!
