Boosting rechargeable battery pack voltage

I have a Tesoro Tejon, and would like to boost the 1.2 volts supplied by the 8 x AA rechargeables to match the 1.5 volts of the alkaline batteries, by using 2 additional batteries to bring the rechargeable pack voltage up to 12 volts.
Has anyone done this with any detector, and was it worth it?
